correcting music video links

correcting music video links

Posted 31 Mar 2014, 1:45:38

I've added a set list for a concert I attended, at this link:
http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/blood-sweat-and-tears/2014/ferguson-center-for-the-arts-newport-news-va-2bc2683e.html

The problem is that two songs, “Mercy” and “Who Will the Next Fool Be” (performed by Steve Conte as a guest vocalist) have the wrong music video links. The song “Mercy” that was performed is the one by Duffy, not “Mercy Mercy Me”, which is what is linked. And the link for “Who Will the Next Fool Be” is for an unrelated BS&T song.

What can be done to correct the links? There are youtube links to proper versions of these songs (although not by BS&T or Steve Conte), but I don't see how I can provide them.

Currently there is nothing that can be done to correct this.

(I think) Setlist.fm just searches YouTube for the artist name & song title, and returns the top result. There may be cases where the song doesn't match, but under the current system there's no way to fix that.

It's a scam, they put in different links so the artists of the incorrect links can collect youtube revenue.

I agree, there should be a way to correct scam links.

D-A-D's song Everything Glows has an incorrect link, I tried changing it but couldn't, here is the correct link:

The correct link for D-A-D, Grow or Pay is also incorrect, here is the correct link:

Same with D-A-D's, I Want What She's Got, here is the correct link:

It's most likely not a scam, just a bad search result. Also, additionally to the fact that some artists don't want their videos to be accessible through the YouTube API, search results may change over time. For example I just got a live version of Everything Glows.

When I search 'DAD Everything Glows', the first five youtube results are the correct song, so why on earth is the video link directing me to: Cirez D – Glow (Original Mix)?

Take a look for yourself; this is what I get when I search 'DAD Everything Glows':

Even when I search 'Everything Glows' without DAD, I get six links to the correct song.

To me, it looks like the owners of the false clips are paying setlist.fm to sneakily place their songs into the set lists so they can collect youtube revenue.

So you're accusing setlist.fm directly, I wasn't aware of that. That's a serious accusation and of course completely wrong.

For what it's worth, the API search and the regular YouTube search might return different results. Furthermore, as explained above, some artists don't want that their videos are available through the API and therefore no videos get found. Also, some videos are in a different category – the video search only searches within the “music” category. Since it's client-side code anyway, feel free to check out the video search on any setlist page by inspecting the requests to YouTube.

'So you're accusing setlist.fm directly'

You're right, it may not be setlist.fm directly, it could be happening anywhere in the chain of the service they use, API, etc.

I'm the original poster of this, from back in March 2014.

Sometime in the last 8.5 years those music links have changed to refer to videos of BS&T performing those songs. I don't think I made those link changes, but they're correct now. I also see how to indicate the original artist and updated the page accordingly. Duffy and Bobby “Blue” Bland are now properly attributed.

No, you're as wrong as it gets and you should stop making such claims.

Thanks for confirming!
