Forever Young as performed by Rod Stewart
- Jun 27, 2012 10:50:04 PM UTC
I have a question regarding the listing of Rod Stewart‘s performance of the song Forever Young as applied on setlists on the site. While the song is certainly a derivative of the Bob Dylan song of the same name, I find it strange to call it a cover of the Bob Dylan song as Stewart‘s version shares composer credits with Dylan but lists Stewart as well as two others as co-writers.
Wouldn‘t this be considered as Stewart‘s song, and not Dylan‘s song, as it really isn‘t a true version of Dylan‘s song? Sort of like Puff Daddy‘s I‘ll Be Missing You which I wouldn‘t think would be considered a cover of the Police‘s Every Breath You Take. Just curious what others think. Thanks!

That is what wikipedia says about it:
Rod Stewart recorded a song titled “Forever Young”, which was released as a single and included on his Out of Order album in 1988. The song was remarkably similar to the Bob Dylan song of the same title, sharing not only a similar melody but many of the same lyrics. Stewart agreed to share his royalties with Dylan

I would leave it as a Bob Dylan Cover as it is right now, but that is just my opinion…

I actually had to go to Wikipedia to read about it because I never realized that Stewart‘s version was based on Dylan‘s. I‘ve actually listened to both many times, but never realized the connection until today. I guess that‘s why I posed the question since it really seems more of an inspiration that a cover, but I can certainly live with it either way. Thanks for your input…

It is NOT a cover of Dylan‘s song. It sounds NOTHING LIKE IT MUSICALLY OR LYRICALLY. I will be changing this back once again and please don‘t revert my change. It is a song of the same name and that is all.

Let‘s say Rod Stewart was strongely influenced by Dylan‘s Forever Young. And because he uses some of his lyrics and a similar verse structure Dylan was credited as a Co-Writer of the song. The chorus is not similar but you see the influence through the verses.
But you‘re right, it is not really a Cover and therefore after I thought about it some time now I would follow your thoughts about it and would prefer to have the Cover-Tag removed.
If the mods are thinking the same way, I would ask them to get this done for all Rod Stewart‘s setlists.

Let‘s say, strongly influenced…
But as I noted in the post before you, I would vote for removing the cover-tag like you do.
It makes no sense changing single setlists though, a mod should change all or none…
