  • The following UK venues were renamed adding “O2” to their names on 1st January 2009. Do you want to add the missing O2 prefixes since that date and delete the incorrect O2 prefixes before that date? (and is it possible to do that without going through each gig individually?)

    O2 Academy Brixton
    O2 Apollo Manchester
    O2 Academy Birmingham
    O2 Shepherds Bush Empire
    O2 Academy Bristol
    O2 Academy Glasgow
    O2 Academy Liverpool
    O2 Academy Newcastle
    O2 Academy Islington (and 2)
    O2 Academy Oxford
    O2 Academy Sheffield
    O2 Academy Leeds
    O2 Academy Leicester
    O2 ABC Glasgow
    O2 Academy Bournemouth

It is not possible to do that without editing each gig individually. So let‘s all start working on that.

Furthermore, at least some of those venues were sponsored by Carling prior to 1st January 2009. I think the Carling sponsorship began in 2004, but I don‘t know the exact date.

  • I‘ve started on Hammersmith Odeon / Apollo / etc

    couple of points:

Many people (there‘s one comment on my page) seem to think it‘s not a good idea to change the venue name each time it gets a new sponsor as it screws up some statistics. What do you think of this? (sorry if I‘ve posted this in the wrong place)

    please merge venues:
    (1)
Hammersmith Apollo, London, England (keep name)
hammersmith apollo, London, England (delete name)

    (2)
Carling Apollo Hammersmith, London, England (keep name)
Hammersmith Carling Apollo, London, England (delete name)

    (3)
    The Borderline, Soho, England
Borderline, London, England – perhaps best to use a new name?:
    The Borderline, Soho, London, England

(“The” is part of the name – do you think it‘s necessary?)

    Done

The guidelines suggest that the current sponsor name should be used.

  • Hi. Is it possible you could revert your last changes to London Apollo, London – back to London Apollo, Hammersmith, London please?

There‘s at least one other Apollo in London (the best known one is in Victoria).

What is the official name of the venue?

  • Back in those days (2000–2002) it was the London Apollo, however there is more than one London Apollo in London – hence best to call it London Apollo, Hammersmith, London. Other than for those years it‘s had Hammersmith in its name for about 50 years.

If the official name was “London Apollo“ then “London Apollo, London, England“ would be correct. It seems this site didn‘t plan for the case when there are multiple venues in the same city with the same name.

I would suggest doing one of the following:

    1. Use “London Apollo, London, England“ even though it‘s ambiguous. Add a comment to each setlist clarifying which venue was intended (Hammersmith or Victoria).
    2. Use “Hammersmith Apollo, London, England” even though that wasn‘t the official venue name at the time.
  • How about

    London Apollo, Hammersmith, London, England

    ?

So you have the official name “London Apollo” and Hammersmith is the place it‘s in. This way it doesn‘t get confused with the Apollo in Victoria.

I would like to avoid that for the following reasons:

    1. By creating a venue called “London Apollo, Hammersmith, London, England“ what you are really doing is adding location information to the venue name. This is not the expected use case and should be avoided.
    2. Having similarly named venues like “London Apollo, Hammersmith, London, England“ and “Hammersmith Apollo, London, England” will cause confusion.
