While that is the likely setlist, they'll still be playing at this point.

Really? So desperate to be the one to upload the setlist that you made an educated guess before the show even took place? Pretty sad.

hcirig July 24, 2011 10:45:14 PM UTC

i don't attend to this show. a friend of mine was here, and he send me the setlist via sms every 3 or 4 songs... i just upload it

One of the things I loved about Dream Theater in the past was the guessing game before each show, because they would change the setlist every night when headlining. Sadly, those days appear to have gone, but I hope they don't become 'too' predictable in the future. Unfortunately, DT didn't just lose a drummer when Mike Portnoy left, they lost the mastermind that made the band so exciting and extra special.

ravenheart July 26, 2011 12:31:29 PM UTC

I wouldn't get too worried just yet. It's the first tour with Magini (who was superb, incidentally). He probably hasn't learnt all of the songs yet.

Once he's been in the band a bit longer and rehearsed more songs with them, they'll start changing the setlist again.

It's too early to draw any conclusions on that yet.

BlackestAdder i think thats what every Dream Theater fan has on their minds right now. When i first saw the 14 song setlist of this tour i thought someone was playing a joke.Dream Theater has always been the band of 2 1/2-3 hours shows, but its what ravenheart said, they have a new member, havent rehearsed a lot of songs

fb:731621150 July 26, 2011 11:55:42 PM UTC

Mike Mangini was beyond belief!!! My eyes were set on him at least 80% of the whole set, i was at the barrier right in the middle and i can tell you, the guy was just amazing!! It's not only his superb technical ability but the enthusiasm, the intensity and the joy in his playing that convinced me.

ravenheart July 26, 2011 11:58:59 PM UTC

Don't forget that Dream Theater haven't played three-hour sets since the Train of Thought tour, which is now 8 years ago, long before Portnoy left. A two-hour Dream Theater set is neither unusual, nor unwelcome. Give it time. They'll go back to their "evening with" format at some stage. Patience.

They were still playing 3-hour set during the Octavarium Tour, let's remember those 2 incredible nights at the Hammersmith Apollo where they played "The Dark Side Of The Moon" on the second night. But that's right, they had stopped playing 3-hour sets long before Portnoy left.

ravenheart July 27, 2011 10:39:55 AM UTC

Ah yes. I skipped that tour on account of Octavarium being such a sub-standard album. I also don't like Floyd, so I never felt like I missed out on much.

BlackestAdder July 27, 2011 11:44:47 AM UTC

Octavarium is one of my three favourite DT albums, and the shows on that tour were incredible. Each to his own, I suppose :-)

reviansmart July 27, 2011 3:53:51 PM UTC

This tour is clearly an introduction to Mangini which is why I suspect they are effectively playing one track from each of the albums to demonstrate to the fans that he is the real deal. It is interesting that they added a drum solo (which Portnoy dropped ages ago) for I suspect the same reason, this would allow them to then go out on the next tour focussed on the new album rather than the new drummer. For the record, if you look at the set list of the dates they did with Iron Maiden they hardly vary so they have done this before. As for me, I was at Leeds and they blew me away; I thought that Mangini was awesome and just loved the shows - they seemed much more of a band than the past few tours, plus hearing the old stuff just rocked. Loved the new track and looking forward to the future!!

BlackestAdder July 27, 2011 5:07:36 PM UTC

When supporting bands like Maiden or Yes, they stuck to the same setlist every night because they customised it especially to entice the fans of the headlining acts.
Some of the points made above are quite insightful, so here's hoping for some variety on the next tour ;-)

sterlingboyd July 30, 2011 7:00:30 PM UTC

@reviansmart-I totally agree that these first shows were to showcase Mike Mangini and that it will take time for him to learn most of the songs. It's especially apparent since they only played 1 song from their newest realeas "A Dramatic Turn of Events".
@BlackestAdder-You should probably try listening to Octavarium a few more times. It took me a few listens to realize just how great of an album it truly is. In my opinion, it's the closest album to compare to Awake. I say that because of the variety of styles in the songs. Your opinion and others are always welcome though, even if different. It's what makes the world go round. lol. Anyway, I just bought my tickets last night for their show in San Francisco. It's great to be able to know what to expect them to play instead of hoping they play my favorities (As I Am, In The Name Of God, Root Of All Evil, NIghtmare to Remember, Pull Me Under, Ytse-Jam (Majesty), Peruvian Skies, Voices, Anna Lee, and on and on) and then be dissapointed that they didn't play them. I think that there is still a possibility that they might change the set list for North America but if not. Here's to next year when Mike should be up to speed (pun intended!). Rock on DT Fans!

BlackestAdder July 31, 2011 6:52:27 AM UTC

@sterlingboyd - I love Octavarium, and as mentioned above (July 27, 2011 11:44:47 AM UTC) it is "one of my three favourite DT albums". I agree that it is the variety of styles, metal and prog, that does it for me too.

Foxan03 July 31, 2011 1:31:49 PM UTC

@BlackestAdder- What you mentioned above is "Ah yes. I skipped that tour on account of Octavarium being such a sub-standard album. I also don't like Floyd, so I never felt like I missed out on much." ??? Perhaps your opinion has changed? I too think it's one of their top albums.
@Foxan03- My two faves are Images & Words and Awake. 3rd would be close between Octavarium and Train of Thought. Yeah, I was disappointed to not see Pull Me Under on their set list and Rite of Passage. The songs they took from each of their albums were interesting to me. Not the ones I would have personally picked. But glad that they did include Ytse Jam and Learning to Live (at most). I like their new song "On the backs of Angels". It continues the spirit of Octavarium.

sterlingboyd July 31, 2011 6:06:07 PM UTC

@BlackestAdder- I guess I'm viewing the postings wrong and that it was actually Reviansmart that posted the comment. My bad. Hard to imagine someone not liking Pink Floyd!?????

BlackestAdder July 31, 2011 8:17:33 PM UTC

@sterlingboyd - It was neither Reviansmart or I that posted the comment about Octavarium being a sub-standard album, but I have to admit I'm not really a Pink Floyd fan either.

reviansmart July 31, 2011 10:03:46 PM UTC

Happy to step back into this debate for clarity here. 1. It wasn't me who said they did not like Octavarium because actually it is one of my favourites by the band. My all time fave would be Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - thanks for asking. 2. I am a huge Floyd fan too, although I sort of went of them when Water's left, but I really liked his solo albums.3. I agree with SterlingBoyd, On the back of angels has an Octavarium feel to it, but the bottom line is that I think I prefer to just about anything on the last album which for me at least has to bode well for the future. OK have fun guys.

sterlingboyd August 1, 2011 2:56:42 PM UTC

Thanks to both BlackestAdder and reviansmart for clarification. Reviansmart-I totally agree that without Roger Waters, it wasn't the same. I saw Roger Waters a few years ago for the first time and was really impressed with how great of a show it was. Especially covering Pink Floyd without David Gilmour or Richard Wright. I did like Momentary lapse of reason and Division Bell though. Just would have been better with Waters. Anyway, I'm pretty excited. The new ablum comes out 2 weeks before I see DT in SF. Hope you gys can see them as well wherever your at. Rock on...

sterlingboyd August 1, 2011 2:58:52 PM UTC

BTW-It was ravenheart that posted not really liking Octavarium or Floyd. Sorry I mixed you guys up but it was good for the insight!

Mike Mangini was fantastic, and DT was headliner.
