The headliner's set begins with "This Place Is On Fire", the filler from WANDERlust, being played several times over the pa. Gavin has technical issues right away. He and Chris Traynor, his guitarist, have a long discussion with the lights off on stage while everyone awaits the start of the show.
It seems like no one in the crowd that I could see was enjoying the first couple songs nearly as much as I was, but once "Machinehead" started in, everyone got into it. Gavin was into all of it, even falling completely over the platform the drumkit sits up on.
Only the hit songs drew crowd reaction, which is everything off Sixteen Stone, except everybody but me knew the cover song that Chris and Gavin played acoustically. They all knew the words. This part of the set was essential cause Gavin needed a breather, that guy was all over the stage and sweating like crazy. His acoustic guitar got all wet while he was playing "Forever May You Run".
During "Everything Zen", Gavin jumped down into the gap between the crowd and stage and started making nosie with the guitar with aid from the baricade. Eventually he was completely upside down hanging over the baricade! He even did a little bit of crowd surfing.
Gavin didn't play guitar on the last three songs before the encore, allowing him to really go crazy. He jumped down in the gap again during "Bullet Proof Skin" and established eye contact with me during the entire second verse, even pointing at me and smiling. I saluted him with a raised fist and the knowledge of his lyrics.
Gavin didn't play guitar on "Adrenaline", allowing him to jump onto the drumkit and completely knocking all of it over! There was drum equipment all over the stage!
The crew came out and put the drums back together while Gavin played "Glycerine" solo on electric. I was thinking about how I want to cover this one when I get my live show going, mostly cause a lot of people know it and it's relatively easy to play and right after Gavin finished it, this lady in front of me turned to me and said that I had a very nice voice and that it was awesome that I knew all the words. I said, "Thanks".
"Comedown" tore it up to end this thing. The energy level was extremely high and it really got to me. This was only the second time for me seeing Gavin in concert. The last time was when Bush played The Warfield across town in 2002. Hopefully it won't be that long between next time.
