Etta James opened for the Rolling Stones. It was a general admission show for only 10,000 people - a small, casual venue by Stones standards. There was a near stampede getting into the arena with everyone pushing the line to get in to the best seats - a number of people were injured. The police pulled people through the chain link gate to get in one by one. I was probably about the 2,000th person in. I was alone, only 16 years old, and in a strange town on vacation from Florida, but I made friends with some college students while in line and they even drove me back to the hotel where I was staying with my parents. Etta did a great set, and I was immediately hooked. Hometown legend Linda Ronstadt came on stage to sing Tumbling Dice with Jagger. It was my first rock concert - I got a ticket from the clerk at the hotel's front desk for $20! RIP Etta.
