"So this is tequila right here," K.Flay declared as she raised her glass to fans last Friday in Hollywood, "this one goes out to anyone who has ever been in love with somebody who didn't love them back. This one goes out to anybody who has got into like a weird, kind of really tense Instagram stalking thing...this also goes out to anyone looking for love on LinkedIn, on Hollywood Boulevard and anywhere else you can find the person you love," before diving into the candid track "Wishing It Was You."
K.Flay's honest banter and lyrics are at the heart of how she creates a palpable, synergistic energy between herself and her fans, something that enraptured The Fonda Theatre for the second date of the Every Where Is Some Where Tour.
A K.Flay set is an emotional journey, one she conceptualized as "four different acts, sort of putting people in different moods throughout the set and then of course ending with a lot of energy, and a lot of spirit and a lot of passion" (more from our interview with her here). While K.Flay delivered set list twists with paying homage to her early career (which she self-describes as "weird rap") with tracks like "So Fast, So Maybe," the majority came from her GRAMMY-nominated alternative full-length sophomore album. Singles "Giver," "Black Wave," and "Blood In the Cut" all delivered intense spirit and passion from fans. It's clear K.Flay has developed and created her own craft since her early days at Stanford, to opening up for bands like AWOLNATION, Third Eye Blind and Imagine Dragons along the way.
What also stood out from this show was how much love could be felt for her band. During Sir Sly's opening set, frontman Landon Jacobs praised on how the K.Flay crew is filled the nicest people he's met. Before introducing them, K.Flay professed "I will say one of the nice, surprising joys of my adult life has been playing music with people that I care deeply about, and three of them are right behind me. So I'd like to take a moment to introduce to you my band, my friends," before introducing Will Baldocchi, JT Daly and Josh Lippi individually. The love wasn't just one-way. During K.Flay's encore, she took on her hard-hitting, fast-spitting early track "No Duh" by herself and stage right you could see the whole band jumping up and down, fist-pumping and rooting her on before taking stage for the final track, "Slow March."
