Setlist History: Mastodon Debuts Several Tracks Off "Leviathan"

Back in 2004, heavy metal band Mastodon was touring in support of their album Leviathan, and debuted several tracks during a performance at the famed 40 Watt Club in Athens, California. The album proved to bring critical acclaim to the somewhat still establishing band and foreshadowed an excellence that we would come to expect today!

Released as their sophomore studio record, it was the guys’ first concept album, based loosely off of Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby-Dick. Singles included "Iron Tusk," "Blood and Thunder," "I Am Ahab" and "Seabeast," and was praised by several publications for its creativity and unique concepts. The online publication Metalsucks also complied a list of "21 Best Metal Albums of the 21st Century So Far," which is based on the opinions of various musicians, managers, publicists, label representatives and writers, and named Mastodon’s Leviathan as the ultimate winner in both 2009 and 2015. The album in particular helped build the rockers' extensive fan base and according to guitarist Bill Kelliher, is the representation of the water in the elemental tetralogy of the band's first four albums.

During their performance at 40 Watt Club, the guys broke out "Hearts Alive" "Naked Burn" "Seabeast" "Megaladon" and "Blood and Thunder," all of which made their first appearance for a live show.

Kicking off with "Heart's Alive," there's no better way to set the tone for the night than with a song that embodies the culmination of Leviathan's storyline. A lengthy piece that also rises and falls, similar to the thrashing movements of thematic whale and it's interaction with the captain. With that as a lead in and a continuation with the albums other tracks, we can only imagine the night was a musical and visual marvel of storytelling.
