Japanese Breakfast Gears Up For New Tour & Album

Japanese Breakfast is back at it in 2025! The indie-pop quartet will release their first album in nearly four years, For Melancholy Brunettes (and Sad Women), on March 21st. Additionally, they’ll head out on tour this spring to perform a series of catchy pop hits, both old and new.

The Melancholy Tour will begin on April 12th at the Coachella Music Festival, where Japanese Breakfast will play both weekends, and continue through September 9th in Minneapolis, MN. Despite the sadness-inducing name of this trek, their dreamy songs are sure to put a smile on fans’ faces…especially those who have waited years to see them perform again.

Lead singer Michelle Zauner and Co. are off to a strong start with the first single, “Orlando In Love.” While this track was live-debuted over a year ago in New York City, we’ve only just heard the studio version. And it’s an ethereal mix of shoegaze, experimental pop, and indie that will have you feeling all the saddie-meets-baddie vibes.

What’s making Japanese Breakfast feel so melancholy? We’ll have to wait for the album, which follows an interesting-but-exciting period in Zauner’s life. After the release of 2021’s Jubilee, the group was nominated for two GRAMMY Awards while Zauner was inspired to write a memoir, Crying in H Mart.

“I felt seduced by getting what I always wanted,” the singer says about the early 2020s. “I was flying too close to the sun, and I realized if I kept going I was going to die.” It’s a dark thought, but ultimately the inspiration for one of the most anticipated records of 2025. Sadness is the key theme on For Melancholy Brunettes, as one would expect, but it’s far from doom and gloom.

According to a press release, these new tracks are reminiscent of “light dispersed,” with “its spectral parts taking the album’s characters through cycles of temptation, transgression and retribution.” Ultimately, this is a tale of Japanese Breakfast being reborn with every upcoming track, and you can get a front row seat to their exciting new era.
