Morrissey wrapped up 2024 with a three-night engagement in Los Angeles including a very special gig on New Years Eve (12/31) at the historic Hollywood Palladium.
The former Smiths singer got the last laugh on the countless naysayers who snarked that the famously temperamental crooner probably would cancel or leave the shows early.
But all three sold-out gigs went off without a hitch, although the NYE show featured a weird bit of fisticuffs from excited fans on the floor.
Were they debating if meat was truly murder?
Did one of them really hate his friend for being successful?
Was one of them singing "You're the One for Me, Fatty" while staring at the other?
The New Years Eve show at The Palladium was Moz's 21st gig of 2024, which was the fewest shows the 65-year-old star performed in a non-COVID year since 2013 when he was limited to just 16.
In 2013 he had a good excuse. You may recall that was the year he developed a bleeding ulcer in January and delivered a note about his health to his fans the following month only he could author. "The reports of my death have been greatly understated. Once admitted to the William Beaumont Hospital at Royal Oak in Michigan, I received treatment for concussion, a bleeding ulcer, and Barrett’s esophagus. The positive from all of this is that there are now no known ailments left for me to try."
The three night run in Los Angeles was not his longest stay in one city in 2024. Morrissey kicked off his tour schedule last year with a four-night residency at the House of Blues in Las Vegas in July/August.
Among a few Smiths classics and a hearty helping of his solo work, Moz treated his faithful fans with a quartet of unreleased material from the controversial Bonfire of the Teenagers project that has yet to find favor with a record label.
Perhaps showcasing it for any labels that might be in the audience, Morrissey played "Sure Enough, The Telephone Rings," "Rebels Without Applause," "I Am Veronica," and "I Ex-Love You."
Three of those tunes have been in his sets since 2022, but so far there are no takers from any record companies.
In an interview he gave a few weeks ago he told the reporter there's even more, newer material ready to release.
"There are two albums, as you know,” he told Fiona Dodwell on her Medium blog. “The second one was re-recorded in France in late 2023, and given a new title. We scrapped half of the tracks and we recorded six new ones, and so it is not the album from the beginning of 2023.”
Have none of them learned the lesson of Chappell Roan? Make the music, put it out into the market. Is it that hard?
Sure he leaves early sometimes or cancels shows others, but it makes news every time.
As advertised, right before midnight, Morrissey joined the crowd for a countdown (en Español), but first there was a slideshow of famous people who were important to him to who had passed away.
While a tape of a choir singing "Auld Lang Syne" played throughout the Sunset Blvd. venue, images of Lou Reed, David Bowie, The Ramones, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and others appeared on the screen behind the stage.
Then a recording of a church bell chiming rang out while Moz and his band sauntered back on stage to applause and the countdown to the new year began.
The speakers blared a recording of Kate Smith singing "The White Cliffs of Dover" while Morrissey held a sign that read "Happy New You" and attendees wore pointy hats that said "how I dearly wish I was not here" on one side and a dejected photo of the singer on the other side.
Morrissey has yet to announce any 2025 tour dates, but his unofficial/official site should be bookmarked as it generally knows all.
