The Format Surprise Fans After 12-Year Hiatus with Acoustic Set!

12 years ago to this very day, indie pop band The Format announced their hiatus. Founder Nate Ruess and Sam Means had their sights set on some solo endeavors—which really did come to fruition—but more on that later. How stoked would you be if you went to a viewing party for a band putting out a concert film…and it turned out to be a reunion show?

Embedded content is no longer available.

That’s exactly what happened to the crowd who turned up to Hello Merch in Phoenix, Arizona to watch “Live at The Mayan,” the Format’s 2007 concert film that hits all streaming platforms tonight.

The band played a 10-song acoustic set, starting with “If Work Permits” off their last album, Dog Problems. They went on to play three more songs from that record, five tracks from their debut album Interventions + Lullabies and a cover of “Unchained Melody.”

There’s more! Ruess and Means announced seven tour dates—two nights in NYC at the Bowery; two nights in Chicago at Lincoln Hall and one date at the Van Buren in Phoenix.

The Format 2020 Tour Dates:

03/21 – New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom

03/27 – Chicago, IL @ Lincoln Hall

03/28 – Chicago, IL @ Lincoln Hall

In case The Format's heyday was, a-hem, before your time, you'd probably recognize Nate Ruess from fun., the pop band who won a grammy for the 2013 song, "We Are Young." Format co-founder Sam Means also explored a solo career, as well as establishing the aforementioned Hello Merch company, where the reunion took place.

The last logged setlist before The Format's break was also in Phoenix, at a venue called Stinkweeds. That was in 2007. Peep the setlist for that here.
