Zakk Sabbath Close Anniversary Tour w/ Deep Cuts and Guitar Solos

While it’s true that it’s been a long while since the original Black Sabbath lineup consistently made music together, there have been some major takeaways from Ozzy Osbourne’s original departure in 1979.

Following the breakup, Ozzy ventured out into the music world, creating an entirely new career as a solo artist.

Within that realm, the heavy metal pioneer gathered a group of musicians around him, creating what would be known as Ozzy Osbourne’s band. Of course, that band would change over time, eventually leading to guitarist Zakk Wylde and bassist Blasko, two of the founding members of Zakk Sabbath.

That’s right, during the band’s downtime Ozzy’s own bandmates, along with former Queens of the Stone Age drummer Joey Castillo, travel around the world as a Black Sabbath cover band.

Not surprisingly, the guys have found much success since their formation in 2014, playing over one-hundred shows across fourteen countries.

Most recently promoting their upcoming release of Vertigo, a faithful recording of their own version of Black Sabbath’s debut self-titled album, the band set out on a brief tour across Europe in celebration of Black Sabbath’s (1970) 50th anniversary.

After hitting seven cities across Europe and the UK, Zakk Sabbath finally wrapped on the celebratory tour entitled In Honor and Celebration of 50 Years ‘o Doom.

While you might think this type of anniversary tour would be somewhat predictable in terms of content, guess again. Of Black Sabbath’s 7-song tracklist, Zakk Sabbath performed only three during their final show including “Evil Woman,” “Behind the Wall of Sleep” and “N.I.B.”

Fortunately, those performances wouldn’t be the only celebratory moments of the night as Wylde took a brief pause in the action to lead the crowd in a traditional rendition of “Happy Birthday” in honor of the band’s 50th “birthday.”

What remained in addition to their geometric modern lighting setup and Zakk Wylde’s plaid kilt attire, was a 15-song setlist that highlighted a wide range of Sabbath’s repertoire including a fair share of greatest hits like “Snowblind,” “Fairies Wear Boots,” “Children of the Grave” and “War Pigs,” during which Wylde joined the crowd for a seemingly endless guitar solo.

However, what really allows the cover band to stand out amongst their lesser-known counterparts is Wylde and company’s ability to nail the deep Sabbath cuts.

During the finale in Amsterdam, it was clear that the band wanted to prove just that, performing a rally of deep cuts such as “A National Acrobat,” “Tomorrow’s Dream,” “Lord of This World” and “Hands of Doom.”

With no encore in sight, Zakk Sabbath bid farewell to a fired-up crowd, and ultimately, an impressive 50th anniversary tour. Even if it was short-lived.

As bandmates Wylde and Blasko gear up for Ozzy’s own solo tour, scheduled to kick off at the start of the summer, it seems Zakk Sabbath may be on a brief hiatus. But don’t fret. We very much expect the cover band to hit the road again in the near future.

In the meantime, we have much to look forward to as Ozzy, who recently revealed that he is battling a form of Parkinson’s Disease, is on the mend in preparation for the upcoming tour. As we wish him well in the coming months, us fans will be full of anticipation waiting to finally get a glimpse of the Prince of Darkness back on stage.
