It's been 62 years since Buddy Holly performed his very last concert on this day in February 2, 1959. Holly tragically died the following day, February 3, in a terrible plane crash. The four-seater charter plane was meant to get Holly to his next tour stop. The crash also killed Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. Holly was only 22-years-old.
Mere hours before, Holly and his band, which featured Waylon Jennings on electric bass, performed an 11-song set in Clear Lake, Iowa at the Surf Ballroom. They were in the midst of the Winter Dance Party Tour, a tour plagued with terrible weather and logistical problems, like a tour bus with no heater.
The Clear Lake set carried a set that featured 9 cover songs, opening up with Paul Clayton's "Gotta Travel On." They also covered classics like Paul Anka's "It Doesn't Matter Any More" and did two songs by Holly's other band The Crickets - "That'll Be the Day" and "It's So Easy."
He performed two songs off of his debut, self-titled album - "Peggy Sue" and "Everyday." The set ended on a cover of Chuck Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man."
