Edgehill is a Nashville-based alternative rock band made up of Chris Kelly (lead vocals, guitar), Jake Zimmermann (lead guitar, vocals), and Aidan Cunningham (drums).

Kelly and Zimmermann met while attending Vanderbilt University and began writing together before connecting with Cunningham in Nashville, where the three solidified the lineup in 2021.

Musically, Edgehill pull from 1990s alt rock which caught the ear of Severance Records who in the past signed Dead Poet Society and The Blue Stones. Edgehill's debut LP Ode to the Greyhouse, drops this Friday, 2/13. Pre-save here.

To get some of that grunge feel, portions of the album were recorded at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, a studio Nirvana recorded the majority of In Utero at in 1993. It's also where PJ Harvey recorded Rid of Me with Steve Albini, and Sonic Youth recorded parts of Dirty.

Recently the trio made their way to the Hollywood studios of Setlist where they chatted with Bree Wilde about rock shows they attended as fans that stuck with them. Click the video above for the full chat or keep scrolling for the highlights.

Dave Matthews, The Gorge, Washington, 9/2, 9/3, 9/4, 2022

Aidan Cunningham: I grew up listening to Dave and going to concerts in Indiana, where I’m from. My parents are huge fans, so we would go see them. They play two nights every summer, so we would go see them there.

My brother and I are huge fans now. Our dream was always to go see them at the Gorge, because that’s the place. They play three nights there. Everyone camps out and are all in the same place, just hanging out with each other.

In 2022, we finally decided at the beginning of the summer that no matter what, we were going. We saved up money.

We showed up with just a Styrofoam cooler and a tent, so we were not prepared at all. The first night we got there, just being able to see the stage from our campsite blew our minds. We never thought we would even see it. The first show night was amazing. Going up the hill and then seeing the venue down below is so beautiful every time.

The setlists were great all three nights. It was one of the coolest times, and a great time with my brother too. We had nothing, and all of our neighbors were cooking food for us because we only had peanut butter sandwiches.

Bree Wilde: Kind of a community feeling.

Aidan: It is. Everyone’s just camping, hanging out, and listening to Dave all weekend.

Chris Kelly: I didn’t realize that was your first time, 2022. I thought you’d been going for so long.

Aidan: No, not to the Gorge. Now we go every year.

Bree Wilde: Have you been since?

Aidan: Yes. We’ve been every year.

Bree Wilde: Were you better prepared the next time?

Perhaps the most famous video from the Gorge was "dancing guy" at Sasquatch in 2009.

Aidan: Yes. The next year it was just me, my brother, and my dad. The difference was we bought camping chairs so we didn’t have to sit on the grass all the time.

Bree Wilde: So you said your parents were fans, so you became fans. They introduced you to them.

Aidan: Yeah. They’re one of those bands that’s super nostalgic. Anytime I listen to them, it brings me back to my dad playing it in the summer by campfires. That’s really special. In high school, that’s when I really got into them myself and fell in love with Carter Beauford. He’s an amazing drummer, and I found a ton of inspiration in him.

Bree Wilde: Would you say you’re a pretty hardcore fan, like you know all of the songs?

Aidan: Oh yeah.

Chris: How many shows have you been to?

Aidan: I think 42.

Young the Giant, the NorVa, Norfolk, Virginia, 2/4/2019

Chris: I had never really been to a concert for an artist I truly loved. This one, I was super stoked.

It was about a 1,500-cap venue, and it felt massive. Seeing their tour bus outside made me think, "I want to be doing this."

The show was magical. Sameer’s voice was unreal. I remember paying attention to how they used pads and electronics live. Every part of my brain was firing, thinking this is what I want to do.

Bree Wilde: So you’re there as a fan, but also studying it?

Chris: Yeah. I hadn’t been to an intimate enough show before to really see how bands operate onstage.

Bree Wilde: What did you take from their shows?

Chris: There was no smoke and mirrors. Just a band playing. The way Sameer talked to the crowd was honest. It didn’t feel like an arena show. It felt authentic.

Dead & Co, Citi Field, Queens, New York, 6/23/2019

Jake Zimmermann: It was my first Dead show. I’d just gotten into them in college. On the train, every stop more tie-dye got on. Everyone was talking.

The lot was full of vendors. I’d never felt anything like it. Then they came out and John Mayer was holding Wolf, Jerry Garcia’s guitar that I’d just seen at the Met.

It blew my mind. I was hooked after that. I went to ten more shows.

Bree Wilde: Expectations versus reality?

Jake: Nothing could prepare me. The energy was what I expected, but not how it made me feel.

Bree Wilde: Did Bob Weir’s passing affect you?

Jake: Yeah. He was part of my life every year. I went to the last shows in San Francisco. I almost didn’t make it, and I’m so glad I did.

Bree Wilde: How would you describe the Deadhead community?

Jake: Accepting and loving. It’s multi-generational. You wear a Dead shirt and you make friends anywhere.

Edgehill are on the road heading all around North America for the next little while.
