Tour Kickoff: P!nk

P!nk doesn't do concerts. P!nk does spectacles.
The kick-off of her Beautiful Trauma tour featured her in a sparkly bodysuit belting out her hit “Get This Party Started” while performing acrobatics on a chandelier suspended high above the stage. For some performers this would have been the high point of the evening. For P!nk? It was the opening number.
From there she moved into performing among melting pink lampposts. Later in the set the stage was transformed into a spooky forest with her dancers clad in animal masks. While none of her collaborators from her latest album were there in person, Nate Ruess appeared in video form to duet on “Just Give Me a Reason,” and during “Revenge” a giant inflatable Eminem filled in for the real thing. P!nk also broke out two surprise covers: she wove No Doubt’s “Just a Girl” into her own song “Funhouse,” and then tackled the anthemic Nirvana song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Since her second album, P!nk’s music has included a recurring theme of finding who you are and being true to yourself. In her hit “Don’t Let Me Get Me” she shed the persona from her first album, dropping the line “LA told me you’ll be a rock star/all you have to change is everything you are.” She’s encouraged girls to be strong, to be smart, to be themselves even in the face of a world that demands the exact opposite from them. That message was carried through songs like “Stupid Girls” and “F*cking Perfect.” But most powerfully was a video from the VMAs where P!nk told a story about her own daughter, Willow, being bullied at school over “looking like a boy.”

“Baby girl, we don’t change,” P!nk said. “We take the gravel in the shell and we make a pearl.”
She sent the crowd in Phoenix home after an encore of “So What” and “Glitter in the Air,” but more than that, she sent them home with an experience.
P!nk’s Beautiful Trauma tour is currently scheduled to run through June. Check out the official tour site for more details and to grab tickets to what is shaping up to be the greatest show of 2018.
