Dido's Astonishing Return With New Album, "Still On My Mind"

Six years since the release of her last studio album, Dido delivers a sweeping body of work with Still On My Mind.
The singer, known for her late '90s/early '00s smash hits "Here With Me," "Thank You," and "White Flag," has had more than her fair share of success, her debut album No Angel was the best-selling album worldwide in 2001 and her 2003 single "White Flag" topped the charts in 9 countries, earning her the award for Best Single at the 2004 Brit Awards.
With so much success amassed over the course of her career, Dido has kept a fairly low profile, releasing a new album every five years instead of every two years like most musicians of her magnitude. Her last studio album Girl Who Got Away dropped in March of 2013, there was a Greatest Hits compilation in late 2013 that only included one new song, so it's been a whole six years since Dido has delivered an original body of work and I'm happy to say, it's been worth the wait.
Still On My Mind is a deeply warm and colorful collection of pop records that remain authentic to what we've come to know and expect from the English singer/songwriter. Opening with the albums teaser single "Hurricanes," Dido gives us a generous taste of whats to come with the gloomy opener that slowly blooms as it builds into an electronic soundscape of guitars and distortion.
"Give You Up" is the albums official lead single and it's everything we know and love about Dido, this is the gold your favorite soundtracks are made of! "Nothing you say will change my mind, you couldn't wait to leave me behind" sings Dido and it feels like home.
"Hell Like This" takes a minimal yet ambitious electronic production and gives Dido an edgy moment to dish it all out.
It's "You Don't Need A God" that leaves me the most in awe, it pulls me in and kisses my ears with its minimal percussion that echoes about before those gorgeous and distinct vocals enter. This is the song that I want to push on everyone I know, so go ahead and give it a listen below.
"You Don't Need A God"
"Take me Home" feels like a nod to some '90s anthem with those "la la la la's" tucked away in the background. "Some Kind of Love" is another album standout, Dido singing "when we lose what we love, don't think anything will ever feel as good again" just strikes a chord, it's so obvious but her delivery is just too perfect. Listen below.
"Some Kind Of Love"
On the title track, "Still On My Mind," Dido highlights what sounds like another instant signature moment, a familiar energy arises as we enter the pre-hook and by the chorus, it hits. This is a Dido song for the ages.
An island breeze comes swooshing in with "Mad Love," it's like Dido's take on the trend that made EDM producer Kygo a household name. "Walking By" keeps a calm for a song that includes the lyrics "please stop telling everybody that I did it for you," quite tranquil, really.
"Friends" kicks the energy up a bit with Dido embracing electronic glory and its oh so good, this one could be dance floor ready with some added percussion. "Chances" continues the trend with light and atmospheric dance floor friendly sounds, it's another moment to behold.
Reaching the final track, "Have To Say" is the melancholic moment we've been anticipating, it's a transcendental sign-off that captures all of the beauty and familiarity of Still On My Mind.

If album artwork and the music have a relationship, Dido clearly nails it because the music here truly sounds like what the album cover looks like, it's all stunning
