Morrissey Rolls Out 3 Live Debuts During European Tour Dates

Morrissey returns this month with a new record, I Am Not Your Dog Chain, slated for release on March 20. In the meantime, The Smiths frontman will be venturing across select cities to promote his 13th solo effort with a short run of live shows. This tour has been one to remember so far. He kicked off the European run of his gigs on March 6 at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, England, which featured quite a jam-packed setlist. He’ll be closing out the European dates on March 14 at The SSE Arena in London, United Kingdom.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic and a decree banning gatherings over 1000 people, Morrissey had to cancel his show at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, France.

Check out our highlights from his two show dates!

March 6 – Leeds, England @ First Direct Arena:
Since launching his solo career in 1988, Morrissey has produced a number of classics on his own. He opened the show with a cover of Elvis Presley’s “You’ll Be Gone,” followed by “I Wish You Lonely” and a cover of the iconic track by The Smiths, “The Boy With the Thorn in His Side,” which was the first time it was performed live since 2013.

The 24-song setlist included many staples but was mostly dominated by the covers themselves. Morrissey covered two more The Smiths songs—"That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore” and “Half a Person,” which was last performed in 2000. He dished out other covers like “Back on the Chain Gang” by The Pretenders, “Morning Starship” by Jobriath, “Some Say (I Got the Devil)” by Melanie and “Lady Willpower” by Gary Puckett & the Union Gap. He also graced fans with his track “At Amber,” which hasn’t been performed since August 9, 2002, at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona.

The opening show also included a slate of live debuts, including tracks from Morrissey’s forthcoming album. “Jim Jim Falls,” “Once I Saw the River Clean,” and “Love Is On Its Way” were among the newest songs he performed on stage.

He closed out the main set with “Jacky’s Only Happy When She’s Up on the Stage” two encore performances of “Half a Person” and “Irish Blood, English Heart.”

March 9 – Cologne, Germany @ Palladium:
Morrissey kicked off the show with absolute classic “How Soon Is Now?” by The Smiths. This setlist contained many of the songs as the opening show, but with a few tweaks here and there. He included a cover of Laura Nyro’s “Wedding Bell Blues.” Covers were still a huge portion of the show, but with such a packed setlist, they are just as meaningful as all the solo and group hits!
