The late Randy Castillo passed away 18 years ago today on March 26, 2000, leaving behind a legacy of musicianship that will always be preserved.
Castillo was the drummer for the Ozzy Osbourne band from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, during which he recorded five albums: The Ultimate Sin, No Rest for the Wicked, Just Say Ozzy, No More Tears and his final recording, Live & Loud, which was released in 1993.
He stayed with Ozzy’s band for ten years before briefly returning for a tour in 1995 after playing with other artists like Bone Angels and Red Square Black. He then played as a drummer with Motley Crue from 1999 up until his death in 2002. The drummer had been diagnosed with a common form of cancer.
Let’s celebrate Castillo’s work by bringing it back to the last "No More Tours" show with Ozzy Osbourne: November 15, 1992. Ozzy Osbourne performed at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, California, where they graced fans with a 14-song setlist glittered with pure gems. The show was part of the 1992 No More Tours tour, which was the first farewell tour for the band after Ozzy decided he wanted to spend more time with his family.
They opened up with Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid,” with Castillo performing a drum solo of “Shot in the Dark” later on. The song has made its way into setlists 500 times, with the last time it was performed being on January 10 at Café Hahn in Koblenz, Germany. Lead guitarist Zakk Wylde also played a solo of “Flying High Again.”
The set was mostly dominated by tracks from Blizzard of Ozz, including “Goodbye to Romance,” “I Don't Know,” “Mr. Crowley” and “Suicide Solution.” They also threw it back to other hits such as “Mama, I’m Coming Home,” “Bark at the Moon” and “Road to Nowhere.”
The band performed another Black Sabbath staple, “War Pigs,” and subsequently closed the main set with “Bark at the Moon.” The performance was followed by two encore performances of “Mama, I’m Coming Home” and “Crazy Train.”
