“They’re All Around Us.” It’s not only the title of Poppy’s US tour, but also encapsulates the way her fans flocked to San Francisco this week for her opening show. The pop-turned-Metal singer served up a 17-song setlist including four live debuts, several deep cuts, and all your favorite genre-bending tracks from her one-of-a-kind career.
Poppy is celebrating her sixth album, Negative Spaces, which came out last November to critical acclaim. AllMusic wrote that she “continues to push the boundaries of heavy music and the limits that genre can impose on an artist,” and we couldn’t have said it any better. While this record dabbles in synth-pop and electronica, it’s a full-blown Metal record at its core. And we’re thrilled that Poppy is opening up the mosh pit once again.
That being said, she started the San Francisco set with a mixed bag of songs from every era. While “Have You Had Enough?” and “The Cost of Giving Up” are new tracks, she also let the audience settle in with older singles like “BLOODMONEY,” “Sit/Stay,” and “Anything Like Me.” And of course, we can’t forget “V.A.N,” her much-talked about collaboration with Bad Omens that’s become a music festival mainstay for both artists over the past year.
After giving the audience a dance party with “crystallized,” Poppy live debuted two new songs — “vital” and “the center’s falling out.” And it was the perfect representation of her versatility as an artist. While the first track is an upbeat, energizing, and electronica-infused track that wouldn’t be out of place in a 2000s movie soundtrack, the latter is one of Poppy’s heaviest numbers yet.
With “the center’s falling out,” she screams like her life depends on it as the audience thrashes along to this dynamic song… and it’s just the beauty of a Poppy concert. The vibes continued to bounce back and forth between Metal and pop with the remainder of the set, as she performed “Scary Mask,” “I Disagree,” “Bite Your Teeth” and “Concrete” with the utmost confidence.
Negative Spaces was produced by Jordan Fish, previously of Bring Me the Horizon, and the metalcore influences in Poppy’s new chapter are very evident. More live debuts included “push go” and “surviving on defiance,” and she finished off with “Concrete” before diving into the two-song encore. Poppy fans already had an idea which tracks she’d end the night with, but that didn’t make it any less exciting!
The tour’s namesake went next. And needless to say, Poppy went hard for “they’re all around us.” Her screams were immaculate as she pranced around the stage in the reddest of dresses, further proving her status as one of the best metal artists of her time. As for the final song, “New Way Out?” It slowed things down a little, but still ended in one of Poppy’s world-famous screaming breakdowns. The evening was everything and more that a Poppy fan could expect, and she’s only just getting started on her US tour.
