Lily Allen Performs All Of 'West End Girl' in 1st Show in 7 Years

The always edgy Lily Allen performed her first full concert in seven years when she took to the stage in Glasgow Monday (3/2).

And staged it was as the 40-year-old singer songwriter, who has been focused on acting of late, as well as theater, presented the night as a theatrical one.

Allen live debuted a majority of her new album, West End Girl, in a production that came across as more of a one-woman musical than as a typical concert.

Even the opening act didn't fit the mold we are typically accustomed to see and hear.

The Dallas Minor Trio warmed up the sold out Glasgow Royal Concert Hall with instrumental arrangements from Allen’s previous works.

Tunes like "Smile," "Who'd Have Known," and the fan favorite "Fuck You," received a stripped down treatment at the hands of a cello trio.

In many ways this is the opposite of when other artists perform an album in their entirety.

Typically the band or singer rocks the LP in question, takes a break, then comes out for some greatest hits. Not here.

Plus, when Allen came out for what is billed as the second act, the production, structure, and use of pre-recorded video elements (including the appearance of collaborator Specialist Moss on “Nonmonogamummy”) mirrored her recent foray into theater and gave the show off-Broadway vibes.

This may have been inspired from the experience Allen had when she made her 2021 stage debut in the West End production of 2:22 A Ghost Story.

Thus the title of her new album is a nod towards that than, say, the Pet Shop Boys' classic.

The singer's last major album release + tour had been the No Shame Tour, which ran through 2019.

The eagerly awaited West End Girl debuted in the Top 10 of the UK charts, not only because Allen is beloved, consistent, and delightful, but because the album is a musical tale of a woman scorned, ala Lemonade, but with literal receipts.

No, really, during one of the nine live debuts, "4Chan Stan," she wore a dress adorned with the receipts of the gifts her now-ex-husband purchased for his mistresses.

Perhaps it wouldn't have hit as hard in a large arena, but in the 2,500 seat concert hall, it was perfect.

Many of the shows of her world tour are sold out so go to her website, and if you see tix are available, grab em.
