Highlights From Coachella 2019 - Weekend One!

The biggest party in the desert turned 20 this weekend as Coachella 2019 wrapped its Weekend One. This three day festival once again celebrated much of what the music industry has brought us over the past year, but many artists also recognized and dedicated their sets to their friends, collaborators, and the legends who've recently been taken from us. This weekend once again proved the talent and dedication behind the industry, and left those in attendance or streaming with many memorable moments and performances. Check out all of our favorites from Weekend One:

Friday - Day One

Jaden Smith

The young artist took his Coachella performance to the sky as SYRE rocked the Sahara Tent which included Jaden performing on a flying Tesla. Jaden brought out his sister Willow Smith to perform his song "B" together, and later brought out other members of his crew for an all around hype performance. Jaden also performed an unreleased track titled "Summertime" which was highly praised from the crowd.

Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino came to close out the first day and he did it with all efforts at full force. He showed the crowd (and the various haters) just how well he can put on a show; from the striking color work to his smashing vocals. His multitude of skills were undeniable from the very first minute and continued throughout his energetic setlist. Gambino took a moment mid-set, as he was visibly brought to tears, to give an emotional speech to the crowd touching upon losing his father as well as the impact both Mac Miller and Nipsey Hussle had on him:

“I lost my dad this year, we lost Nipsey, we lost Mac...What I’m starting to realize, all we really have is memories at the end of the day, that’s all we are. All we are really is data. You pass onto your kids, you can pass it on to your friends, your family. The problem with us, millennials like everybody here, we have so much data, like, we know what’s gonna happen. We’re too afraid to plant a tree that we know we’re not going to eat from...So what I’m saying is while you’re here, while we’re here, feel something and pass it on.”

Saturday - Day Two

Weezer

Weezer put on the absolute throwback party set as they rolled through all their hits and brought out some legendary guests. The band hit the staged with "Beverly Hills" dressed matching in full barbershop-quartet garbs. With only a few tracks in, they caused a gasp from the crowd, when they introduced Tears for Fears to sing "Everybody Rules the World." And three songs later, Rivers Cuomo pointed out that “there’s a lot more girls than we’re used to seeing at a Weezer show,” before bringing out TLC’s Chili to smash “No Scrubs” together.

Billie Eilish

Billie's set got delayed a little over an hour due to tech difficulties but many of her eager fans held it out for their beloved star. Once all was fixed, Billie joined her fans with her iconic goth-tinged vocals and sound for a wild performance. The packed crowd knew every word to her setlist which was manly composed of tracks realized only two weeks ago. Towards the end of her set, Eilish brought out rapper Vince Staples to perform their collaboration "&burn," but due to more technical difficulties his mic produced no sound. He later took to twitter to joke about it:

Tame Impala

Kevin Parker and co. took the Coachella stage for the first time since 2015, and closed out night two with a psychedelic exploration. The band took the Main Stage with one of the most impressive stage designs of the weekend. They captivated the crowd with their production as they performed a setlist made up mostly of tracks from their last album Currents. The band also live debuted their two new tracks "Patience" and "Borderline." Check out footage from their headlining set:

Kid Cudi

Cudi came out with banger after banger. He was the perfect end to day two as his crowd celebrated all of the rappers classics and new favorites from Kids See Ghosts. Many excepted Kanye to join him onstage, but Cudi shined brighter with his energy and intoxicating humming. Easily one of the best sets of the weekend.

Cudi, or the "Man On The Moon," dedicated his last song "Pursuit of Happiness" (which he performed twice) to fellow artists Mac Miller and Nipsey Hussle, and asked the crowd to sing "as loud as y'all can."

Sunday - Day Three

YG

Last year it was Beychella... but it's Boachella now! The Compton rapper took the stage Sunday night, dedicating his entire set to his late friend and frequent collaborator Nipsey Hussle, performing a variety of their collaborations including "You Broke" and "FDT." YG's set also debuted a new song "Snitch N****" and he announced that his latest album is dropping May 3. He got his Boachella crowd roaring as he brought out a Donald Trump impersonator before breaking into "FDT." Check out his full setlist below:

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande closed out Weekend One in historic fashion. Not only did she became the youngest person, at 25, ever to headline at Coachella but was also only the fourth woman to hold a headlining slot. Her undeniable voice, stunning visuals, FOUR outfit changes, and stacked special guest appearances left the crowd in full amazement. The much-rumored — and heavily hinted on social media — reunion of *NSYNC did in fact happen as the boy band (minus Justin Timberlake) came out to sing her song "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" before leading into their hit "Tearin' Up My Heart."

Ariana was also joined by her good friend and frequent collaborator, Nikki Minaj, to perform their tracks "Bang, Bang," and "Side to Side." The guest list wasn't done yet, as P. Diddy and Mase hit the Main Stage to do "Mo Money, Mo Problems" which paid homage to deceased rappers Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Mac Miller, and most recently, Nipsey Hussle. Diddy also celebrated Grande to the crowd by saying: “Right about now I want you to make the loudest noise you could ever make for my sister right here. She’s been through a whole lot and she’s still standing, she’s with y’all."

The pop star put on a must see show, and she gave the audience all the glitz and glam possible. Her setlist ripped through most of her latest album Thank You, Next but she threw in all the other favorites as well. Grande closed out the festival listening to the crowd as they shouted "Thank U, Next" before leaving her fans with a rippling pride flag projected on the screens and fireworks in the sky.
