7 Years Ago The Rolling Stones Played 14-Song Set at The Echoplex

On this day in 2013, The Rolling Stones put on a surprise show that made onto their list of iconic performances. Taking place at the Echoplex in Los Angeles, California, the show was one of 30 concerts that supported the 50 & Counting tour. These dates celebrated the 50th anniversary of the band, kicking off in October 2012 and ending July 2013.

The 14-song setlist featured an onslaught of covers, along with tracks from their wide discography. They pulled songs from records such as Let It Bleed, Some Girls, Beggars Banquet and Emotional Rescue, among others. Opening up with “You Got Me Rocking,” and some of Mick Jagger's hilarious Brit-wit, joking that Echo Park was an up-and-coming neighborhood much like The Rolling Stones were an up and coming band.

The first slate of songs included lively performances of “Respectable,” “She’s So Cold,” “Live With Me” and “Street Fighting Man.” They also included their fair share of covers, too, paying homage to their favorite tracks. They performed soulful renditions of O.V. Wright’s “That’s How Strong My Love Is,” The Temptations’ “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)” and Robert Johnson’s “Love in Vain,” accompanied by Mick Taylor. Mick Taylor stayed on for another song, “Midnight Rambler.”

What made this setlist particularly special was the performance of Chuck Berry’s “Little Queenie,” which hadn’t been performed since September 19, 1998. The show at the Echoplex was the last time the song appeared on The Stones’ setlist, though it has been performed 620 times by other artists. The rest of the originals in the setlist are among some of the band’s most popular hits: “Street Fighting Man,” “Miss You” and main set closer “Start Me Up.”

Jagger carried that same lively energy for the encore performance of “Brown Sugar.” The band closed out the evening with the famous “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” The experience was all too surreal in a small venue that had a 700 person capacity. Other celebrities were notably in attendance, including figures such as Johnny Deep, Gwen Stefani and Skrillex.
