On This Day In 2009, Green Day Live Debut 21st Century Breakdown

On this day in 2009, the East Bay punk rockers in Green Day performed at The Independent in San Francisco, California. The setlist for the show was filled with live debuts of new material, as it took place one month prior to the release of the band's eighth studio album 21st Century Breakdown- which dropped May 15, 2009 via Reprise Records. The show also included additional musicians joining Green Day for the entire tour- Jason White, Jason Freese, and Jeff Matika.
The first portion of Green Day's 33-song San Francisco setlist kicked off with their massive hit "Welcome to Paradise" from the group's second studio album Kerplunk. The setlist continued with 17 songs from 21st Century Breakdown, making their appearance on Green Day's setlist for the first time ever. Act I: Heroes and Cons, Act II: Charlatans and Saints and Act III: Horseshoes and Handgrenades were performed in the same order of the album's track listing.
The epic set continued with a 15-song encore. The second portion of the setlist which began with "American Idiot" and "Jesus of Suburbia," also included a snippet of a cover of George Thorogood & the Destroyers' "Bad to the Bone." The band wrapped up their performance with "Minority" from their sixth studio album Warning. See Green Day's full setlist from the show below:
