Marquee Memories: Dorothy

Just a few weeks ago, Dorothy put out their fourth and heaviest album, The Way. A 10-track, all-caps, outlaw country-tinged collection of bangers. During the album promo, we had the chance to speak with the fierce frontwoman, who shared a few formative live music moments. Hear about her first concert, the Creed Cruise and being in the presence of Gwen Stefani.

blink-182

My first concert, I was 16 years old. I went with my neighbor. blink-182, playing in San Diego. New Found Glory was opening for them, and I even think Alien Ant Farm was there. This was when I was really discovering the rock genre and all of its subgenres and sister genres. So I was at the record store buying Audioslave, Nirvana, blink, anything I could get my hands on, Green Day, angsty rock music as a pre-teen. I remember the show being very high energy, a lot of fun. They were very, very funny. They were a little raunchy. I might've gotten lost in the crowd at one time. I remember seeing the mosh pit and I was like, "What are they doing? These people are crazy." So I mean, it's how every pre-teen's concert should go.

Creed

So I actually got to see Creed recently. I went on the Creed Cruise. They're a thing, we have rock and roll cruises that sail The Bahamas for about a week. Usually all the bands tend to be friends, and obviously on a cruise the food is ridiculous. So you're eating a lot. I've been off the stage and on the stage, and it's not for the faint of heart. Trying to maintain your balance while you're either performing or watching a band, it's kind of like you're in your own music video. You have the winds and the waves, and you're just really hoping that you don't sink in the middle of the ocean. Once in a while, you get the thought like, "If we went down, no one would find us."
The band sounds fantastic live. They are all master musicians, master vocalists. They've just got these prolific, legendary songs. It's one after the other, they're amazing. I definitely recall falling in love with them as a young girl. The lightness and the love in the music, the spiritual themes, I really resonated with that. I didn't get to see them in their heyday, so I made up for it by going to as many shows as I could last year, and I'm so glad I did. It was definitely a bucket list moment.

Gwen Stefani

This one deserves a reveal for the queen that she is. Gwen Stefani, I love you.I wanna be friends with you. Sorry. No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom album is obviously a staple in any ‘90s baby's CD collection and it was in mine. Female-fronted, pop-ska-punk-rock band, right? So I got a lot from Gwen growing up. She's got a very unique voice. I mean, when it's Gwen, you know it's Gwen. I love her style. But the thing that struck me the most about her was this aura. I think it's something she carries innately inside of herself, probably just comes from her spirit.
A few years back we had awful fires in Los Angeles. At the time, I was managed by Linda Perry, and she helped to put on a fire benefit show. Natasha Bedingfield was there, Macy Gray was there, Katy Perry was there. They're all amazing and when Gwen took the stage, you could feel the atmosphere shift. It was just so lovely. She had this powerful, loving presence that never left me. It's something I always will remember that you as an artist can really impact the crowd and the atmosphere. And I want people to feel good and feel loved, and that's what she did for me. So I love you Gwen.
