Wet Leg Rocks No Vacancy To Prepare LA For "Moisturizer"

It shouldn't be much of a surprise that the female-fronted British group who struck it big at the end of the pandemic with their hit single about a chaise longue would follow it up in the quirkiest of ways.

To promote their sophomore effort, moisturizer, the Grammy-winners from the Isle of Wright made a sassy appearance on the Tonight Show followed by a trip to the Tiny Desk (which has yet to air).

Then they flew across the States to make waves in California beginning at the ultra-cool No Vacancy bar where just a few hundred fans and radio winners got to see their set.

No Vacancy is quite an unusual venue for a band of Wet Leg's calibre to be performing in. Last year at this time the group was preparing to have their Coachella debut.

The typical move when coming back to Hollywood would be to play a few nights at a big hall like the Hollywood Palladium, or a historic club like The Roxy.

No Vacancy is not a place where it's normal to see rock shows. Ignore the fact that in 2017 Lana Del Rey live debuted much of her Lust for Life album there; or that Green Day, Pixies, and more recently The Hives have all rocked the three-story Victorian dance club with speakeasy vibes.

It really is just a unique place to dance in near Hollywood Blvd. after walking through a faux refrigerator door. Come to think of it, of all places in Hollywood, it just may be the one dance spot that very well might have a chaise lounge beneath a giant tree adorned with sparkly lights.

Sponsored by a local radio station, the eight-song set was introduced by two DJs and the band took the stage and got right to business playing the album's first single, "catch these fists."

What's good about the tune is it pushes the band into a slightly newer space without losing its original hushed casual sound.

But its lyrics might be more telling than one may think.

“I just threw up in my mouth / When he just tried to ask me out,” could be a typical reaction a woman would have at a place at No Vacancy on a Friday night, except most of the album is a fun jaunt exploring love and happiness. Specifically love between a woman and someone who is non-binary.

“I thought I was straight all of my life until I met my current partner—these love songs are about them,” thirtysomething singer Rhian Teasdale told Under The Radar.

“I just found it so much more interesting and empowering to be writing love songs where I’m not lusting over a man—it feels a little bit different,” she explained.

Hester Chambers, the other beautiful woman in the band, and lead guitarist, told the Guardian their rocket to fame has been a beautiful dream that's about to embark on a new chapter with the forthcoming tour which will also include a barrage of festivals, no doubt.

“We’re heading back into the madness, ready or not,” said Chambers, who is in a longterm relationship with the group's other guitarist Joshua Mobaraki.

“This weird dream just keeps going. I’m down to clown.”

Talk about weird, you really must check out their Windows 95-esque homepage.

Wet Leg now takes a little time off (if they don't play a surprise Coachella secret show... they are in town after all) and then hits the road again next month in the UK.

Tickets available on their website.
