Kacey Musgraves arrived on horseback on a sweltering Saturday afternoon (4/18) at the cozy Mojave tent at Coachella.
A last minute add to this year's fest, Musgraves made a name for herself in 2019, the last time she was at the festival, when she tricked the crowd into saying "Yee Haw," and hilariously scorned them for their eagerness.
After her abbreviated 13-song set was completed it made many wish they had booked her for both weekends in a larger venue, but sometimes it is what it is, and we should be happy for what we have.
The entrance was so simple, so cool, so on-the-nose for a country star to pull off at a polo field surrounded with paddocks and even security on equines, it makes you wonder why it hadn't happened before.
A few years back Lana Del Rey made her way to the stage on the back of a motorcycle. This year Sabrina Carpenter made her entrance in a vintage convertible. Kacey casually strolling up on the back of a mare was possibly cooler than all of the previous women.
When she dismounted, she and her band broke into the title track of her forthcoming new album, Middle of Nowhere, that drops on May Day.
It was followed by another live debut from what will be her seventh studio album, "Back on the Wagon."
Despite only having a 45-minute time slot (which she was allowed to stretch a tad), Kacey revisited the Yee Haw moment in a Bieberesque public YouTube viewing sort of a way.
That was followed by her cover of George Strait's classic "All My Exes are from Texas."
That was followed the third live debut of the afternoon, "Uncertain, TX," also from the soon-to-be released album.
Kacey had some real fun at the end of her set when she asked the fans if any of them had been experiencing a dry spell. While some of us expected her to just lead into the first single from the album, "Dry Spell," the typically cheeky singer/songwriter appeared with fruit-shaped sex toys which she generously tossed out to the crowd.
Don't expect such a display at her next stop at Tiny Desk. But who knows maybe she will make it a part of her upcoming tour?
