Red Hot Chili Peppers Debuted Californication On This Day in 1999

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, known for their timeless fusion of funk and rap, their live performances and tube sock– singular– have become one of the most popular and inventive rock groups of this millennia. With a career spanning almost 40 years, they've produced some of rock's most memorable songs, like "The Zephyr Song," "Under the Bridge," and notably, "Californication."
On May 15, 1999, the fresh-faced Chili Peppers took the stage at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon and performed a 10-song setlist, including live debuts of Californication's title track and "Around the World" in anticipation of their upcoming Californication World Tour.
They played other songs from the record like “Parallel Universe” and “Scar Tissue” as well as cuts from Blood Sugar Sex Magik, One Hot Minute, The Uplife Mofo Party Plan and a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground" before ending the night with "Sir Psycho Sexy."

The Californication World Tour lasted from June 18, 1999 through September 22, 2000 and saw the return of guitarist John Frusciante– who rejoined the band in 1998 after quitting six years earlier– to much excitement from fans.
This tour would become the band's biggest to date and was their most successful at reaching a wider audience. This tour saw the band headline Woodstock '99 and and marked the last time "Backwoods," "Green Heaven," "Organic Anti-Beat Box Band" and "Subterranean Homesick Blues" were performed live.
Throughout the tour, the Chili Peppers covered a variety of artists including Elton John, James Brown, the Ramones, N.W.A and Stevie Wonder.
I couldn't find a video of the band's ACTUAL May 15 performance, so here's a clip from a few months later at Woodstock '99 (yes, that IS a naked Flea on stage).
