Unlocked: Liz Stokes of The Beths

New Zealand charmers The Beths are hopping all around the world to support their latest release, Expert In a Dying Field. The last time their tour made a stop in Los Angeles, we snagged singer Liz Stokes for a tour of her phone. Watch!

Three favorite apps:

"I really like "Libby". This is my library app. It's got books, but you put them on your phone. Most of my reading is just like putting books on hold, and then they're like, “Your book is ready.” And then I'm like, “I'm not ready to read it yet, give it to me again in two weeks.” And then it does, and it’s magic.
Second app. I've gotta have my weather app.
I love knowing what the weather is because I'm like, “I wonder what the air is outside. I could go and check, or I could just press this button.” First thing I think about when I wake up in the morning, “Is it a pants day, or is it a shorts day?”
This is an app I've been playing a lot lately. Ah, no, it's too lame. It's called "Pikmin Bloom". It's like "Pokémon Go", but with flowers. Oh look, I just finished fighting a mushroom, so it’s... wow, all the cool points I got from fighting this mushroom. I don't know, it's just, it's basically like a walking game, so like it's the fanciest, and most pointless pedometer."

Voice memos:

"Usually if I'm recording a voice memo, it's like I'm walking, or like on a bus or something, or in a public place, and so I'll like quietly, and shamefully kind of record a little thing.♪ La, la, la, la ♪ You know, that kind of thing. I don't have any titling, I'll just like run my fingers across the keyboard. So this first one is called "Riff" but then "Riff" is already taken. "Riffggghh". "Blue Crab". What is this one? (guitar strumming) Oh yeah, this is just like a song I wrote for a friend's project. I hadn't written a song in ages, and it was like the first song I've written. And it was nice to not have the pressure of it having to be like a "Beths" song. It could just be like a little song about talking to a bird, which is what it's about."

Pre-show to-do:

"I'm heavy user of the "Google Keep" notes app. This tour I've been writing out setlists every night, so that I know next time we're in Denver, I wrote about like what we played last time. Previously I would just have one for the entire tour, and just mix it up, and then I wouldn't know exactly what we played unless I searched it up on Setlist.fm, which is apparently a very useful resource for me as well.
And then I've got like things to do before the show. Which is like, “What are we gonna play?” Or like, “Oh no, I forgot to clip my nails, and now my nails are too long to play the guitar. I'm gonna make lots of mistakes.” And you can't clip your nails on stage. People just don't like it."
