CopacaGaga: 2+ Million Little Monsters See Lady Gaga in Brazil

If you think a lot of people flocked to see Lady Gaga at Coachella and then in Mexico City, you won't believe what she just did Saturday (5/3) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Copacabana Beach, which has famously hosted 1.5 million fans for a Rolling Stones show in 2006, as well as 1.6 million for Madonna's grand finale last year of her Celebration Tour, was the venue for Gaga's record-breaking gig that drew over two million Brazilians and tourists.

It was mayhem at the beach, indeed, as either 2.1 people took in the spectacle as the Associated Press is reporting or 2.5 fans were there as Variety and Gaga claim.

“Tonight, we’re making history," Gaga told the massive crowd who were kept safe by 3,300 members of the military, 1,500 cops, and 400 military firefighters.

'Thank you for making history with me,” she told her fans.

Sadly some of those law enforcers were necessary as a bigoted group-plotting violence was discovered, and stymied, by police. Brazilian cops claim teenagers and others were being recruited online to explode bombs and Molotov cocktails as a reaction to Gaga's LGBTQ+ fanbase. Thankfully the ringleaders were arrested and the show went on safely.

The drama was taken care of so smoothly, Gaga's team claim they didn't know of any of it until the morning after the enormous gig.

"Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks," her team told AP.

"Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night's show—the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil," Gaga wrote on her IG and Twitter accounts Sunday.

"The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you," she wrote.

The photographs from above the scene are enough to cause anxiety or awe depending on how one feels about crowds.

For the local economy however, it was "paws up" indeed as an estimated $100 million was pumped into Rio and its surrounding areas, according to Vanity Fair, as over 500,000 fans converged from all over the world to witness this memorable stop of the Mayhem Tour.

Set-wise, Lady Gaga's recent gig in Mexico City, including the addition of "Blade of Grass," appears to be the blueprint for what she will be doing for now on during her critically acclaimed world tour.

Naturally Mayhem tracks like "Abracadabra," "Disease," "Killah," and "Die With a Smile," are getting special love at these shows. But also fan favorites such as "Bloody Mary," "Poker Face," "Paparazzi," "Alejandro," "Born This Way," "Shallow," and "Bad Romance" are just rewards for those who schlepped their way to the famous beach and stood shoulder-to-shoulder in that beautiful mass of humanity.

Because you just don't pop into town and keep your fingers crossed that everything works out when you perform a complicated, technically tricky, gargantuan gig in front of millions of people; the night before the main event, Gaga ran through a big chunk of the show as a rehearsal Friday.

Sharp-eyed fans may have noticed that 13-song set on the site.

Nearly half of the tunes in the rehearsal were from the new album, including "Abracadabra" which the throngs of fans who surrounded the stage belting out the words back to her, adorably.

The surprise rehearsal for the fans became a touching surprise for Mother Monster who clearly heard the impromptu singalong.

"I know that this is not the first show here. I know it's just the rehearsal," she told her Monsters. "But it feels like it's the real show."

Gaga now takes two weeks off to prepare for a four-night stand in Singapore's National Stadium. Then in July she does three nights in Vegas, three in San Francisco, four in LA, and that sort of pattern around the US and then Europe.

The Mayhem Ball rolls on all year so get your tickets on Gaga's website.

These drone shots are amazing.
