Two months after playing to 400,000 in Mexico City, which was her largest audience ever, Shakira topped herself in Brazil performing a free beach party to a massive crowd 5x that size.
Around 11pm on Saturday night (5/2), the global superstar took the stage on Copacabana Beach in Rio to approximately 2 million fans, many who had arrived early in the morning to get as close as possible to the Grammy-winning star whose catalogue has been streamed more than 28 billion times.
“I arrived here when I was 18 years old, dreaming about singing for you,” Shakira told the enthusiastic crowd after taking the stage. “And now look at this. Life is magical.”
The singer was not alone on the stage. Along with her band, Shakira was joined at various times throughout the 25-song set by guests Caetano Veloso for “O leãozinho”, Maria Bethânia and musicians from samba school Unidos da Tijuca on “O que é o que é?” and Ivete Sangalo for “País tropical”.
In a very special moment, she teamed up with local fave Anitta for their live debut of “Choka Choka.”
“For us, parties are serious business. Because parties generate jobs, income, development, and identity for the city,” Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere said prior to the spectacle.
Some have criticized the city for proclaiming it was a free concert when tax money was used in addition to private sponsorships to make the event happen.
“Our investment in this show will give us a financial return 40 times greater,” he said, seemingly to quiet the detractors.
For decades Rio has hosted enormous concerts on their world famous beach to stimulate tourism and celebrate great music.

"The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you," she wrote on Twitter the next day.

Two years ago Madonna concluded her Celebration Tour in front of 1.6 million attendees on the beach.
She, too, had Brazilian singer Anitta join her on stage, but as a guest judge during the "Vogue" dance-off. Another guest Madonna had that night was her daughter Chifundo Mercy Jones who accompanied her on piano on "Bad Girl."
The Rolling Stones 2006
During their 145-stop Bigger Bang Tour, the Stones rocked 1.5 million Brazilians 20 years ago.
It was the largest audience they ever played in front of during their long and wild career.
