On This Day in 1993, The Flaming Lips Live Debuted 2 New Songs

On June 4, 1993, The Flaming Lips took the stage at a little rock and roll club in Hollywood called Raji's and live debuted two songs. It was a couple weeks ahead of the release of of their sixth studio album, Transmissions from the Satellite Heart. They opened the 7-song set with the album's opening song, "Turn It On" - a song that's only been played 17 times to date, the last time being in 2014.

Three songs in, the Lips performed what would become their biggest radio hit - and somewhat of a pop cultural icon - "She Don't Use Jelly."

Although it was the first single off Transmissions, the song really took off the following year, when it was featured on an episode of MTV's Beavis and Butthead. "Jelly" is the band's 4th most-performed song to date, clocking in at 628 plays. It's also been covered by the likes of Ben Folds Five, KT Tunstall and Beck. Check out the full set list for the show at Raji's and then revisit their music video.

The Flaming Lips have tour dates beginning August 20, 2021 in Ogden, Utah.
