Garbage Kicks Off European Tour with Live Debut and Classic Cover

Thirty-one year ago Garbage came out of nowhere with a spunky redheaded Scott and a drummer who produced Nevermind.

Few would have thought three decades later they'd still be touring the world, packing them in, and making catchy music delivered in compelling concerts.

Wednesday night in Milan, the band performed to a sold out crowd and pulled out some old gems.

How many bands that started in 1993 who are touring today have the same line-up as when they began, and never had any one drop out or added?

The list is extremely short, but Shirley Manson (vox), Duke Erikson (bass), Steve Marker (guitar), and Butch Vig (drums) are not your typical band. As you probably know.

Shirley has said she didn't believe in herself as a bonafide singer for the first phase of Garbage, a band she says she just stumbled into.

These days Manson knows exactly who she is and it shows.

Kicking off their first mainland European tour in five years, Garbage pulled out some tunes they hadn't played in a while, a cover of a Siouxsie song that's older than the band, and a live debut from an album nearly three years old now.

"The Creeps," from Garbage's 2021 offering No Gods No Masters, got its debut in Italy and it came across so strong it makes you wonder what took them so long to start playing it?

Was it too complicated? As the locals would probably say, it was fantastica.

Even though Garbage has covered "Cities in Dust" pretty regularly since June of last year, it sounds fresh every time.

Shirley channels Siouxsie Sioux perfectly and Butch's drums just makes the song, which originally came out in '86, pop.

The band also dusted off some tunes they hadn't played in a bit: "Hammering in My Head" which hadn't been played since 2018, "Why Do You Love Me" which has been waiting around since 2019, and "Milk," which was one of the two songs in the encore and hadn't been performed since 2016.

"Milk" goes way back for the band. It was their fifth single off their self titled debut and had a guest appearance from Tricky on the single.

Maybe when Garbage visits France next month the stars will align and Tricky, who now lives there, might join them on that track.

It'd be tres bien.

Garbage next plays in Holland, then Luxembourg and other Euro stops before doing a half dozen dates in the UK.
