The Marías have a way of lifting listeners off their feet. As the band’s lead singer and namesake, María Zardoya’s airy melodies envelop anybody listening in this aura of transcendental tranquility. During the first two of four sold-out nights at Foro Puebla in Mexico City, The Marías entranced audiences with their gravity-defying compositions.
Celebrating the release of their second studio album, Submarine, The Marías are taking their ethereal beats across the globe on “The Submarine Tour.” Besides a one-off “secret” show in Downtown Los Angeles two days after the album drop, these four nights in Mexico City are Submarine’s big debut. Announcing the first two shows on their socials back in April, the band reflects on their decision to “give life” to the new album with this set of performances.
“[Mexico has] always shown us a ton of love since day one and we really wouldn’t want to start anywhere else.”
Each of these performances transported audiences to an alternate dimension, as they drifted through The Marías’ compelling current. They swayed with the ebb and flow of each setlist, simultaneously soothed by the weightlessness of much of their discography—like the live debuted “Sienna” and “Echo”—and enlivened by the intoxicating bass-driven groove of tracks like “Run Your Mouth” and “Un millón.”

Hypnotized in the band’s melodic trance, fans couldn’t get enough, echoing each lyric with passion and excitement. The crowd erupted in a surge of enthusiasm, as Mexico City native and fellow cool-girl Girl Ultra joined Zardoya on-stage both nights for an otherworldly rendition of “Lejos de Ti.”
With the buoyant nature of their enchanting rhythms, The Marías continue to make listeners feel as if they’re floating away on a distant cloud, adrift towards some euphoric destination. Their music fills any available space with its expansive tenderness, reflective of the bond that binds this band together. The band's unmatched chemistry truly comes through with the seamlessness of each creation, and with a tour on the horizon, theirs is a spectacle you’re going to want to catch live.
