Five Great Angus Young Solos During AC/DC's 2025 Power Up Tour

For a guy who wears a child's school uniform to work, Angus Young, is all business.

The 70-year-old guitar hero, whose hair is white as snow, just led his band through a North American tour that saw them sell out stadiums larger than they've ever played in their 50 years of touring.

They did it with the same set for every one of their 13 shows. And they did it with way more energy than you'd expect from a group led by a singer and guitarist who've been around the block.

The 2025 Power Up Tour seemed like a declaration of a few vital points: that AC/DC can still rock as hard as bands half their age, they can sell out football stadiums after not touring the States in nine years.

And most importantly it was a statement that Angus Young can still shred throughout some of hard rock's greatest guitar hits.

Here are a few to enjoy.

"Riff Raff" - 5/8/25, Acrisure Stadium, Pittsburgh

When Axl Rose temporarily took over for Brian Johnson during the Rock Or Bust Tour, US Leg in the summer of 2016, he added two Powerage -era songs to the setlist that the band had all but given up on: "Rock 'n' Roll Damnation" and "Riff Raff."

What's crazy is, before the Guns 'N Roses singer stepped in for the first of what would be 23 gigs (on 5/7/16), AC/DC hadn't performed "Riff Raff" in 37 years.

The song stuck in the set, and when Brian returned for the Power Trip festival in the Coachella Valley, he sang it for the first time ever.

It has continued to remain in the set, which is a blessing because Angus clearly likes thrashing through those opening power chords and rocking out during a number of places in the arrangement. Thank you, Axl.

"If You Want Blood (You've Got It)" - 5/24/25, Soldier Field, Chicago

Since their Power Trip appearance, AC/DC has opened every one of the 37 dates on the Power Up Tour with “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It).”

Each night begins with Angus Young in full schoolboy regalia—coat, tie, and cap—ripping through the intro as the band, now anchored by Alanis Morissette alumni Chris Chaney on bass and Matt Laug on drums, greets the roaring crowd.

The song first appeared on 1979’s Highway to Hell, the final studio album with Bon Scott, but curiously, it’s absent from 1978’s live album If You Want Blood You’ve Got It.

There really should be a name an album whose title track is elsewhere.

That odd omission places it in good company— a few albums you probably own don’t feature their namesake tracks: Houses of the Holy (Led Zeppelin), Waiting for the Sun (The Doors), The Colour and the Shape (Foo Fighters), His 'n' Hers (Pulp), Screamadelica (Primal Scream), Siamese Dream (Smashing Pumpkins), The Seldom Seen Kid (Elbow), World Shut Your Mouth (Julian Cope), and Boys Don’t Cry (The Cure).

In each case, the title track appeared elsewhere—a B-side, a later album, or a standalone single, and not where you'd think it'd be.

This was the set the entire run through North America

At Soldier Field in Chicago, Angus charged onstage with the ease of Walter Payton and the force of Dick Butkus.

Looking at the venues the band played over the 40+ years they've been rocking Chicagoland, you can see the band has (up until recently) felt more at home in 18k-20k arenas instead of football stadiums. Which is nice.

"Let There Be Rock" - 4/26/25, Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

One final note about the album, If You Want Blood.

AC/DC could have easily made their first live recording a double LP like many of their peers.

Between 1974 and 1979, double live rock albums were practically common place including Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band’s Live Bullet (1976), The Rolling Stones’ Love You Live (1977), Ted Nugent’s Double Live Gonzo! (1978), Thin Lizzy’s Live and Dangerous (1978), Aerosmith’s Live! Bootleg (1978), UFO’s Strangers in the Night (1979), and Queen’s Live Killers (1979).

Just a few of the double live albums from '74-'79

But instead they chose to make it a lean single disc whose longest song, "Let There Be Rock" would come in at a mere eight-and-a-half minutes.

My have things changed. Now, decades later, during this tour, as they have since 1996, Angus truly gets into "Let There Be Rock," stretching the dynamic narrative to over 20 minutes, spiking the football to conclude the regular set.

"Shoot To Thrill" - 4/30/25, Ford Field, Detroit

Angus seemed extra charged up when the Back in Black banger kicked in.

"This is Lion Country," Johnson reminded the crowd in the giant domed stadium and soon Angus was back in the spotlight playing that Gibson SG like he was ringing a bell.

Even though "Shoot To Thrill" was the second song on the 1980 landmark LP, it was never released as a single. And yet it has been played more in concert than the highest-charting song from the album, "You Shook Me All Night Long."

Indeed, "Shoot to Thrill" has been rocked out 10 times more than "You Shook Me..." despite coming out at the same time. Weirder still is "Hells Bells" has been performed almost 100 more times than "You Shook Me..."

If Angus and/or Brian ever sits down with us for a discussion, we'll have to find out from them how this happened. One would think the more radio-friendly hit off of the best-selling rock album ever wouldn't be the 4th-performed tune in concert.

"Whole Lotta Rosie" - 4/14/25, AT&T Stadium, Dallas

Even though AC/DC hasn't played "The Jack" in a decade, it's still the most-performed song in their catalogue with "Whole Lotta Rosie" gaining steam in second place by 60 performances.

Although "The Jack" is cute and a little naughty, "Whole Lotta Rosie" is a better fit for these enormous football and soccer stadium shows the band has gradated to. While both tunes give Angus plenty of room to wail, who doesn't want to hear the ode to the woman with mythological measurements and weighs 266 pounds?

The Live at River Plate (2012) version of "Whole Lotta Rosie"

In Dallas, Angus gave her a worthy tribute with the familiar flair we've heard on the twelve releases the track has graced. That's right “Whole Lotta Rosie” appears on Let There Be Rock (1977), If You Want Blood, You've Got It (1978), Live (1992), Live: 2 CD Collector's Edition (1992), No Bull: Live from Plaza de Toros, Madrid (1996), Bonfire (1997), Stiff Upper Lip Live (2001), Plug Me In (2007), Backtracks (2009), Iron Man 2 (2010), Live at River Plate (2012), and Rock or Bust Tour Edition (2015).

Not too shabby for an obese seductress who "ain't exactly pretty." Is there any wonder why Angus seems eternally inspired to rock out during that tune?

AC/DC are taking a littler breather before heading back to Europe for another round of shows. Get your tix on the AC/DC website.
