Evanescence officially opened their “Sanctuary” tour on June 11 at iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, FL. Those who came to scream along to “Bring Me to Life” were more than satisfied…as were the ones hoping to hear new music. Spoiler alert: the 21-song set contained a whopping ten live debuts, along with longtime staples and special guests that felt even bigger than your standard first night of tour.

The show opened with the live debut of “Sanctuary,” setting the stage, literally, for a night that clearly centered on Evanescence’s newest chapter. From there, the band followed with another live debut, “Tell Me When You’ve Had Enough,” before ripping through “Afterlife” and “Rapture.” Basically, Amy Lee and Co. made it clear early on that they weren’t on a pure nostalgia run, but a full-fledged expedition that centered new material alongside their best hits.

That said, Evanescence still knew exactly when to trigger old memories of watching them on MTV before school. “Going Under” and “Lithium” were played within the first ten tracks — giving longtime fans a chance to reminisce before the night shifted back into newer territory. That balance is part of what made the kickoff so beautifully done…with the band switching between Sanctuary, Fallen and The Open Door like it’s their full-time job. Because, well, it kind of is.

The West Palm Beach set continued with live debuts of “Like You,” “Self Destruct,” “Calm Down,” “Beautiful Lie,” “Forever Without You,” “About Us,” and “Wide Open Heart,” giving fans one of the clearest looks yet at what makes Sanctuary so special. It’s their first album in five years, and Lee described it as an outlet for “so much that feels wrong and out of control.” She continued by calling it “a place to ignite hope through the power of music and connection,” and we can’t think of a better way to sum up an Evanescence concert.

The middle of the set made room for “Call Me When You’re Sober,” “Wasted on You,” and “Better Without You,” connecting different eras of the band’s catalog before one of the biggest moments of the night revealed itself. Yes, we’re talking about “Fight Like a Girl,” featuring Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox and Nova Twins. It wasn’t just a performance, but a statement that heavy music has no shortage of powerful women, and they wasted no time getting together on one stage to prove it.

Then came “Bring Me to Life,” arguably their biggest hit and one every millennial knows by heart, followed by “Who Will You Follow,” “My Immortal,” and the live debut of “Wide Open Heart.” Closing with a brand-new song after playing one of the most beloved ballads in the band’s catalog is a choice, but it fits the whole point of the “Sanctuary” kickoff. Evanescence are honoring the songs that made them goth-rock icons, but they’re also asking fans to follow them somewhere new. And if this show was any indication, Evanescence supporters both old and new are along for the ride.
