Less than 24 hours removed from the tragic passing of Paul Kueker, a Niantic, CT-based fan, at their second of two sold-out Madison Square Garden shows, CT-based jam band Goose returned to the stage for a pop-up show, announced and sold for $40 per ticket just days prior in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage in Central Park.

The status of the event remained in question until the band themselves confirmed that show, would, in fact, go on, with an Instagram post just an hour or so before they were set to take the stage. "Today’s show in Central Park will go on as planned,” they wrote. “We considered whether or not we were going to play and came to the decision that the best thing we can do right now is bring our community together, lean on one another, and offer a space for healing.”

Taking the stage at 6:30 p.m., a half hour later than anticipated, guitarist Peter Anspach immediately addressed the situation with a brief speech, a moment of silence for Keuker, and the dedication of the performance in his honor. This, as well as opening number “This Old Sea,” was streamed live and posted to Goose’s YouTube channel.

An appropriate tune to ease their way into a heavy evening, the lyrics of “This Old Sea” resemble that of a religious hymn of sorts, featuring the repetitive hook “Oh my child, worry no further/ Lay your burden on me/ And I will take your every trouble down to the bottom of this old sea.”

They would then perform just 11 songs over the span of a two hour and 50-minute period (a 40-minute break occurred in between sets), with each song ranging from 15-20 minutes in length. The exception was “Give It Time,” played for just seven minutes and designated as the encore despite the band not leaving the stage prior to, due to the venues 10 p.m. curfew.

This, according to a group of three fans comfortably propped up against a railing near the exit for a majority of the show, is not typical practice. "Yeah, we’ve seen them twice before this, once in Connecticut and once in Austin, and this isn’t… normal,” one said with a laugh. Another, stretching his calves at around the two-and-a-half-hour mark, concurred.

One couldn’t help but think that the extended renditions of each selection, most with segues leading directly from one to the next, were done to keep both their bodies and minds exorbitantly busy for prolonged periods of time. The second act, particularly once the sun went down and the usage of their standard lighting fixtures were able to be used as accompaniments, felt rather unperturbed.

Having performed much of, if not the entirety, of their new record BIG MODERN!, over the course of their two prior shows (this writer regrets not witnessing their encore of the near 13-minute "SALT" as the encore from the night before), not a single song from the record was performed. Instead, they ran through several fan favorites, including “Hungersite, ”the title track off 2022’s Dripfrield, “Jed Stone” off 2025’s Chain Yer Dragon, “Dustin Hoffman” off 2025’s Everything Must Go, and covers of Great Blue’s “Yeti” and Nina Simone’s take on the traditional “Sinner Man.” “Dripfield,” mostly through lead singer Rick Mitarotonda’s vocal approach, offered a Pearl Jam-like energy that was instantly evident, enough that an interpolation of something off of Ten would have been welcome.

“Sinner Man,” written by American composers Les Baxter and Will Holt in the mid-1950’s, popularized by Nina Simone in 1965, then later covered by The Wailers, Sinead O’Connor, and others, was perhaps the highlight of the evening. Providing the most infectious, and lengthy, musical pocket (though “Your Direction,” from the first set, certainly came close), the band efficiently displayed their ability to create, and linger on, extended musical passages, without hyper fixating on one specific instrument for the duration of said passage. Impressively, there appeared to be little to no self-aggrandizing from the members themselves as they navigated each tune. The admiration came from the capacity crowd, who were, for the most part, collectively, absorbing rather than outwardly reacting.

At 9:53, the band remained on the stage in lieu of departing and returning for an encore, walloping through seven minutes of “Give It Time” off of Everything Must Go. With its anthemic “La-da-da-da” sing-along sections, expert usage of horns, and a sense of finality within the drum and guitar arrangements (it is just the second song of the EMG tracklist), the tune served as the ideal exit point for a band, and its fans, who used this music as the catalyst to take a well-deserved exhale.

Goose will remain on tour for much of the remainder of 2026, with a plethora of support acts. Dates below:
