RIP Denise Johnson - See Her First Tour with Primal Scream

Sad news flooded the music world today as we learned of the passing of Denise Johnson, who contributed her soulful vocals to influential bands like Primal Scream, New Order, and Johnny Marr.
Best known for her work with Primal Scream from 1990-1995, you can hear her lead vocals on Screamadelica's "Don't Fight It, Feel It" and backing vocals on "Movin' On Up" and Loaded." She also appears on their 1994 follow up albums Give Out But Don't Give Up.
In honor of her legacy and memory, we're looking back at Primal Scream's 1991-1992 Screamadelica tour, which enlisted Johnson to sing vocals live.
The tour kicked off around summer 1991 and toured several legs for an entire year before wrapping up officially with a concert in Sydney, Australia in December 1992.
According to our archives, the setlist averaged at 9 songs a show. Their most performed song was "Movin' On Up," followed by Johnson-led song "Don't Fight It, Feel It."
They also often performed a cover of "Slip Inside This House" by 13th Floor Elevators and "Cold Turkey" by Plastic Ono Band. Some cities got to witness them cover "No fun" by The Stooges, too.
While songs off Screamadelica dominated the setlist, they also would weave in "I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have" off their self-titled. In 1992, they started previewing songs off of Give Out but Don't Give Up, particularly "Call on Me."
In 1992, they graced several summer festivals around Europe, most notably Glastonbury and Roskilde.

Johnson's contribution to the UK music scene will never be forgotten. The artist was gearing up to release her debut studio album, Where Does It Go, on September 25, 2020. The album is largely acoustic and features both original and cover songs.
