By 2004, Green Day was a well-oiled rock machine after reaching massive success with their major label debut 1994 album, Dookie, while helping to take punk rock to the mainstream along the way. Gearing up for the release of their seventh studio album, Green Day was about to be introduced to a new generation of music fans with 2004's rock opera, American Idiot.

American Idiot was a huge success, having reached #1 on charts across the globe including the Billboard 200 chart in the US. Spawning the radio hits "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and the title track, "American Idiot," Green Day were back on top once again. With a commercially successful album, of course comes a commercially successful tour and not without its controversy, some likened the American Idiot Tour to an anti-Bush rally, with frontman Billy Joel Armstrong revealing they did "everything to piss people off," which including wearing a mask of former President George Bush onstage in weeks leading up to the election.

The American Idiot Tour launched on July 29, 2004 at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. The 29-song setlist included music from their 1991 release Kerplunk! and pulled from all their major label albums, with only 2 songs from their new album American Idiot making the cut on the first night of the tour. The live debuts were "American Idiot" and "Jesus of Suburbia," the band would live debut more tracks from the album as the tour went along which was likely largely due to the fact the album came out two months after the tour kickoff.

The setlist did hold a ton of covers, they covered artists like Cheap Trick, The Who, Misfits and live debuted a cover of Queen's "We Are the Champions" for the first time that night. Check out the full setlist from the show American Idiot Tour kickoff below!
