Five Fantastic 2024 BET Awards Moments

Are the BET Awards the most exciting of all the award shows?

They're not boring, that's for sure.

This year's awards were held at LA’s Peacock Theater, hosted by Taraji P. Henson and honored Usher with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Along the way they made some great memories.

Taraji P. Henson, "It's About Us"

The Oscar-nominated, Golden Globe-winning actress kicked off the show dressed in the red hoodie and red cap Kendrick donned to spoof Drake in the Juneteenth Beatdown.

Henson created new lyrics to KDot's song of the summer and turned "Not Like Us" into "It's About Us," as a the BET Awards are typically a celebration of Black culture.

The song addressed a plethora of issues in about one minute: pay disparity, nepotism, and selflessness.Henson rapped pretty well in spite of having grillz in her mouth.

Ms. Lauryn Hill & YG Marley - "Lost Ones," "Praise Jah In The Moon"

Despite the drama that often surrounds her, any time you hear Ms. Lauryn Hill is performing, the correct move is to drop everything, buy a ticket and pull up a seat.

Not only did the diva arrive and perform on time, but she was surrounded with a full band and singers, and her son YG. Together they presented a medley of lush reggae few could top.

A highlight was "Survival," a YG Marley tune he'd only performed once before, on the Tonight Show in May. Hill's lightening quick freestyle was super impressive.

To wrap it up, Fugees bandmate Wyclef Jean came out to perform "Fu-Gee-La" with her which brought the crowd to their feet.

Childish Gambino, Teyana Taylor, Victoria Monét, Coco Jones, Chlöe, Keke Palmer & More Celebrate Usher

At just 45 years-old, Usher might seem a little young to get a Lifetime Achievement, but when you count his hits and realize he's been performing for over 30 years, you too will agree that now is a great time to give him love.

Of the wonderful short tributes of various stars singing his tunes, two really stood out. First was Coco Jones who rolled out a smoldering version of "There Goes My Baby," reminiscent to how he did it during his Vegas residency that sold out 100 shows.

Beyonce and Usher in 2004 in Puerto Rico

And if that wasn't enough, Teyana Taylor and Victoria Monét harkened back a decade ago when Beyonce and Usher performed "Bad Girl" together 20 years ago during a stop on his Truth Tour.

Teyana and Victoria blew the cathodes out of my TV, answering to the affirmative to the heretofore rhetorical question, "can you improve on an Usher + Beyonce performance?"

Will Smith - "You Can Make It"

Will Smith, at one time a guaranteed summer blockbuster movie star, started off as a rapper and tv star.

He knew he always has a home at BET and in the Black community, despite slapping the beloved Chris Rock. Smith did the right thing though and surrounded himself with a gospel choir (just in case) and gospel star Kirk Franklin for the live debut of "You Can Make It."

Is this what we're looking for from the former Fresh Prince? Not exactly. But for now it will do.

Ice Spice - "Think You The Sh*t"

Ice Spice is such a curiosity at times. Sure she can rap, and she's pretty, but her lyrics aren't anything to write home about and she often comes across as half the speed of many of her peers. And yet, she's being pursued romantically by Shaq and Taylor Swift wants to be besties with her.

Her performance at the BET Awards was able to incorporate a lot more production than we saw at Coachella which added the zing that is sometimes missing from her performance.

Later this month she kicks off her first ever tour dubbed the Y2K Tour. But before that she's hitting some festivals in Europe. Get tickets to all of her shows on her cute website.
