Lady Gaga brought her Mayhem Ball Tour to Las Vegas Wednesday night (7/16) at the T-Mobile Arena doling out the over-the-top theatrics, vocals, dancing, and hits Little Monsters have been delighting in for years.
Gaga pulled generously from her chart-topping eighth studio album, Mayhem opening with “Abracadabra,” the second single from the album, whose video has garnered over 168 million views despite being just five months old.
Mother Monster also blessed the crowd with dusting off “Summerboy,” a tune she hadn't rocked from the stage since her 2009 Fame Ball Tour.
But the best surprise for the 18,000 faithful were the two love-centric live debuts "LoveDrug" and "Kill For Love," the latter of which appeared for the first time outside of "Shadow of a Man."
This means there's only one song left from Mayhem that Gaga has yet to perform, "Don’t Call Tonight," which is the 10th track on the standard version of the cd.
For those of you who saw Gaga's eye-opening performances at Coachella, Rolling Stone said she “didn’t just revisit [Coachella]—she expanded it, sharpened it, sprinkled in some nostalgia, and fully realized the gothic dream she had only just introduced.”
USA Today added that her voice was “smoldering with the chameleonic intensity that has secured her respect as an actress.”
Speaking of Coachella, eagle-eyed fans of our database may notice that if they click the Tour Statistics for the Vegas show, they're greeted with these numbers that sure look paltry.
Did the shows she did in Indio not count? What about the 9 gigs she played this year in Asia, Brazil and the USA?
Yes those shows count, of course they do. But those were part of a mini-tour Gaga titled The Art of Personal Chaos.
What Vegas experienced was the first show of the MAYHEM Ball, a very special production she dedicated to “all the freaks, the lovers, and the ones who stayed.”
Could Gaga have played across the I-15 freeway at the far more spacious Allegiant Stadium instead of at T-Mobile? Of course. Heck, she played to two million fans in May on Copacabana Beach.
But that's not what she wanted with this tour.
“This is my first arena tour since 2018,” Gaga, one of the few performers with 14 Grammys, an Emmy, and an Oscar, said in a statement.
“There’s something electric about a stadium, and I love every moment of those shows. But with The MAYHEM Ball, I wanted to create a different kind of experience — something more intimate — closer, more connected — that lends itself to the live theatrical art I love to create."
The 28-song set had many highlights including "Die With A Smile" with Gaga behind what appeared to be a custom-built acoustic upright piano with an exposed frame and harp-like metal stringing on the sides, housed in an open wooden structure.
Talk about mayhem. Is it custom? Can we order it on Amazon? For years she's toured with the wraparound keyboard, but this is even more wonderful in its uniqueness.
