Dodger Stadium has never seen as much black as it did this past weekend; as My Chemical Romance descended upon the venue for two incredible nights. The first, July 26th, was particularly noteworthy…with Gerard Way biting into a Dodger dog, the most powerful pyrotechnics, and a live debut of “War Beneath the Rain,” an unreleased song.
Don’t fret; you definitely heard that last part correctly. Fans have clamored for new music from My Chemical Romance ever since their reunion a few years ago. And while they’ve released one additional song, “The Foundations of Decay,” news of the upcoming The Black Parade 20th Anniversary Tour reignited rumors of possible unreleased songs and deep cuts. In true MCR fashion, the band delivered at Dodger Stadium.
After wrapping up the first portion of the set, in which they donned marching band outfits to perform their iconic 2006 album in its entirety, it was time for My Chemical Romance to take the stage. Not The Black Parade, not Killjoys…just the beloved emo band we all know and love. They kicked things off with a Clarice Jensen cover before live-debuting “War Beneath the Rain,” an emotional number dedicated to their late friend Doug McKean.
“I don’t remember how long ago it was, but before the band broke up, we had a studio in North Hollywood and we were making a record that never came out,” Way told the Los Angeles crowd. “And this was one of the songs we really loved from it. It was just us in the studio with our friend Doug McKean, he was there recording it. His family’s here tonight, I want this to go out to them.”
The song was anthemic, emotional, and a beautiful mix of all four of their albums — the perfect way to kick off the “My Chemical Romance” part of the show. Unsurprisingly, this momentum and excitement only built up throughout the rest of the evening. MCR continued to play the classics, like “I’m Not Okay (I Promise,)” “Summertime,” “DESTROYA,” “Na Na Na” and “Vampires Will Never Hurt You.”
The band concluded the Los Angeles show the only way they knew how — with a stirring, tear-inducing performance of “Helena” that brought listeners all the way back to 2005. The Los Angeles shows were a testament to My Chemical Romance’s past, present, and future, and you can now relive every exciting moment. Check out the full Dodger Stadium, Night 1 setlist here.
