JR JR 'Off The Road' with Crate & Barrel

Detroit duo JR JR make the kind of cozy indie pop that’s perfect for cuddling into a couch to, so it’s no wonder that longtime friends Josh Epstein and Daniel Zott have a profound appreciate for the places they call “home.”

“I love my home a lot, and I’m learning to love it more,” Epstein tells Crate & Barrel. “I think up until I bought a place, I always felt like living spaces were very temporary and didn’t necessarily feel the need to make them my own. The building that I live in is an old elevator manufacturing company. I really like that space, because it gives me the freedom to be loud and make noise and make music. It also feels like it has some character, and some history, and I really like that.”

While Epstein values the architecture of his surroundings, Zott’s focus is on keeping his small space organized so there’s room for the important stuff. “The thing that is important making a room sort of tie itself together is organization. I have a 900 square foot house, so it’s very tiny,” he says of his approach to homemaking. “I’m sort of picky when it comes to furniture. A bed is like, the ultimate piece of furniture. My first years of marriage, we just slept on a mattress, because I couldn’t find the right bed. One time we walked into a Crate & Barrel, and I literally just went in the door and was like, ‘That’s it!’ And I bought it, right there, and brought it home.”

Zott may value the bed above all else, but for Epstein, who loves to host gatherings, it’s the seating situation that truly matters. “My favorite way to entertain friends in my home is to cook on the grill outside,” he says. “I like to have a comfortable place for people to sit, because no one can be fully present if they’re feeling uncomfortable where they’re sitting.” But whether it’s sitting or sleeping, one thing is certain: JR JR is a band that knows how to feel at home.
