Encore Interview: Slipknot

Slipknot's Shawn "Clown" Crahan stopped in our setlist.fm studio for a Tour Update interview recently. The American heavy metal band has just embarked on their 2019 Knotfest Roadshow and are celebrating the release of their latest studio album We Are Not Your Kind, out THIS FRIDAY August 9!
With Clown in the studio for Tour Update, we had a fairly lengthy chat with the rocker and to be honest, the guy is loaded with so much wisdom, we were forced to leave so many of his words on the cutting room floor for the video interview. We felt we didn't have a choice but to have an Encore Interview feature for Slipknot, the fans deserve it, so dive in!
On recording the new album, We Are Not Your Kind:
We decided that this time around, sixth album in, that it would be a disservice if we didn't start standing up for ourselves saying that we would like to write longer and not have the pressure of just "ok you should start." So we wrote this album over four years and that's a big accomplishment for us, to be able to put our brains, our art, our emotions and the temperature of the world, take it all in for great lengths of time.
We'd come into LA for about a month and a half, work and then go home and think about everything we did and then come back to LA with a fresh perspective and mold those canvases.
On his favorite song on the new album:
I've had a song that I wrote for a long time and I've always tried to get it out. I do a little bit of singing on it, more vibeful. Corey brought something to it that I could have never ever in a million years imagine that he could bring to something that is so sincere to me. It's a song called "My Pain," it's a reminder of why I do what I do and why I love music so much.

On the new masks representing the new era:
I always like to think that we change like we do in our human years. I mean I was 26 when I started the band with Paul and I'm going to be 50 in a couple of months. I feel like if I had to be stuck in what I was I would no longer be here, I have to be able to change. I think we take great pride in working it out.
On their hometown show:
I'm part of my hometowns commerce, I help make the facts about where I live. The fact is that every year I go to the fair, every year I watch music since I was a little kid so why isn't our band playing the fair ground? What's beautiful is at the beginning of my career I wanted everything right now. The fame, the money, the girl, whatever it is that people think they want. Me, I'm so happy that things come in time, that's what I've learned in Slipknot, I don't care I haven't played the fairground in the last 20 years, I get to play it now at the top of my career! And it's a new grand stand, and it's a new stage, and there's room for people to mosh. I just feel it's going to be a day to recognize that I'm still living the dream and that the dream is very gifting as long as I'm accepting. It's gonna be very nice to walk out on something that I feel I belong to.
