Deep Purple Played 16-Song Set On Ian Gillian's Birthday in 1987

Today we celebrate the birthday of legendary rocker Ian Gillian, the singer of classic rock band Deep Purple. The talented musician turns 75-years-old today, and he's still going strong, with DP's most recent tour, The Long Goodbye, wrapping up only this past December, and many more dates in the works.

Today we're honoring Gillian by stepping back into our Setlist Time Machine to take a trip through rock history and visit Deep Purple's 1987 House of Blue Light Tour. Their stop in Helsinki happened to land on Gillian's 42nd Birthday back on August 19th, 1987.

The tour was in support of their 12th studio album of the same name. The show carried a 16-song setlist that opened up with their classic gem "Highway Star." Throughout the set, they performed "The Unwritten Law" with a drum solo, covered Rainbow's "Difficult to Cure" and John Lord whipped out an epic keyboard solo right before they performed "Knocking at Your Back Door."

The main set ended on "Space Truckin'" but they came back to encore three songs - including show finale "Smoke on the Water." The setlist was mostly made up off songs off their hit album Machine Head and The House of Blue Light. They also included cuts off of Deep Purple in Rock and Perfect Strangers.
