Taylor Swift's "Cruel Summer" continues to be the surprise hit of the year.
As the Eras Tour winds up its US swing with a series of sold-out concerts in Los Angeles, the four year old single continues to climb the charts despite Swift's record label focusing on the current single, "Karma."
But Lover's "Cruel Summer" has a mind of its own and refuses to cool off.
Originally released in 2019, the global pandemic stifled its growth at #29 on the Hot 100. But with the unprecedented popularity of the Eras Tour and its primo placement of it on the setlist added with the scream-along lines, co-written by the magical St. Vincent, like "said 'I'm fine' but it wasn't true, I don't wanna keep secrets just to keep you," it's the perfect anti-love love song.
In early June, three months into the tour, Republic Records (seemingly reluctantly) re-released "Cruel Summer."
Since then it has steadily climbed up the charts, resting today, August 2, at #8 behind Olivia Rodrigo's latest.
Is it affecting "Karma?" A smidge. It's at a respectable #11 after 19 weeks on the charts. "Anti-Hero" is hanging in there at #19 after 39 weeks proving, hi, it's not the problem.
In a way, this is probably the best result of the end of the US leg of a 40+ song tour of an artist's first 17 years cranking out hits: an overlooked gem should rise to the top.
Let's see if Taylor's team is crafting an Eras-era music video to finally accompany the hit that wouldn't die.
Taylor will be bringing the Eras Tour to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA (it'll be interesting to see how many times she says Inglewood and not LA), Thursday through August 9.
It'll be her longest run in one city in the tour and her BFFs Haim are opening.
Although it sold out in minutes, it never hurts to click on her website to see if tickets have been released at the last minute.
If not, there's always the parking lot:
