Olivia Rodrigo proved she had a lot of guts Tuesday night when she brought out her pal Chappell Roan during her sold out show in Inglewood.
Roan is easily the biggest pop music sensation, attracting enormous crowds at every festival she is performing at. Reportedly she drew more people at Lollapalooza than any of its headliners.
So inviting her to come on stage, might be the last thing a young pop star would want to do because it might overshadow the memories of the attendees.
But Olivia is clearly a confident star.
“I absolutely adore her. I think she is one of the most singular, inspiring, powerful artists I've ever had the pleasure of meeting, and I'm so excited because she's gonna sing one of my favorite songs of all time with me tonight," the 21-year-old Rodrigo said to her audience on the first of her two-night stand at the spanking brand new arena.
And then Chappell came out and the two singers covered "HOT TO GO" with the entire audience.
Rodrigo is hot and has been smoldering since even before Guts dropped. Her tour is sold out everywhere she goes with tickets getting gobbled up minutes before they go on sale.
But Chappell is on a different level, especially on the Billboard charts.
Her album, Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, would be #1 right now if it wasn't for one Taylor Swift and that unstoppable The Tortured Poets Department.
"Hot To Go," which came out way back in August of last year is currently at #16 on the Hot 200.
That singles chart is where Chappell has another half dozen bangers making themselves at home: “Casual,” “Feminineomenon,” “Good Luck, Babe!,” “Pink Pony Club,” “Red Wine Supernova,” and “My Kink Is Karma.”
Last year you may remember Olivia had Chappell open for her during the first few months of the Guts tour.
In Sept. of 2023, Chappell tweeted, "Olivia Rodrigo is bringing me on to open her Guts US TOUR!!! Oh my god oh my god oh my godddd I AM SO EXCITED. thank you Olivia for asking me I am very honored. I adore you and the community that surrounds your project. I CAN’T WAIT."
So this was a reunion of sorts for the two successful women.
If there is one person who should feel especially proud of seeing the young ladies rock the new LA arena, it should be Dan Nigro. Both of Olivia's albums, Sour and Guts were produced by Nigro who was also a co-writer and producer.
Likewise Chappell has been working with Nigro dating back to 2018. So who better to present Nigro & Rodrigo with the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year award when they won it three months ago?
Was there a show after Chappell sang with Olivia? Of course.
But because the Guts tour has been top-heavy with many of her radio hits early in the show ("bad idea, right?" kicks off the show, "vampire" is the third song, "drivers license" is fifth), Olivia really gives her all on tunes like "brutal" and "obsessed."
Would it too much to ask for a Olivia + Chappell + Sabrina Carpenter + Renee Rapp + Amyl and the Sniffers football stadium tour?
Before playing at the Intuit Dome, Olivia sold out four nights (8/14, 8/15, 8/17, 8/18) a mile north at the Kia Forum. Add those ticket sales to the two nights at the Intuit, and that's 100k just for Olivia. The football stadium in between, SoFi, has a capacity of 70,000. Why should anyone believe Olivia and Chappell and Sabrina alone cannot sell 70k tickets or that adding two other female fronted groups can't help that bill do it two nights in a row.
Maybe the second night let Chappell close the gig.
Olivia, who is from LA, is now taking a much needed breather.
But she's back on the road next month in Asia and Australia. Get your tickets on Olivia's website if you can.
