Metalheads traveled back to 1999 with the kickoff of Slipknot’s Here Comes the Pain 25th Anniversary tour — complete with an old-school setlist and reimagined masks! As the nine-piece group took the stage in Indiana on August 6th, their longtime fans were treated to classic tracks that they haven’t witnessed in decades. And may or may not ever hear live again.
Essentially, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Slipknot and their fanbase, lovingly called “Maggots.” While they gave fans a sneak peek of their reconceptualized self-titled era at the Sick New World Festival a few months ago, nobody had any idea what they were in for on the upcoming Slipknot tour. And as it turns out, we’re still reeling from the showmanship of the original masked metal band.
This trek is, first and foremost, a quarter-century celebration of their self-titled debut album, and they did the project justice in every way. Corey Taylor and Co. opened with (sic) for the first time since 2012, before launching into more heavy classics like “Eyeless,” “Wait and Bleed,” “Get This,” and “Eeyore.” They also played the first known rendition of “Tattered and Torn” in 26 years, plus a take on “Me Inside” that fans have missed for almost a decade.
Noticeably absent from the setlist were Slipknot staples like “People = Sh**,” “Custer,” and “Disasterpiece.” But funny enough? The Indiana crowd didn’t care. They were too busy headbanging to the songs that put Slipknot on the mainstream metal charts all those years ago; complete with reimagined versions of their original jumpsuits and masks that added shock value and nostalgic vibes to every song.
Sure, most of the crowd wasn’t physically there to witness the golden era of Slipknot in 1999…but they may as well have been after this throwback performance. The group continued with more oldies like “No Life,” played live for the first time since 2000, and “Only One,” back from a decade-plus hiatus, before diving headfirst into an encore that caused uproar in old and new fans alike.
Even as Slipknot has undergone countless artistic eras and climbed the mainstream and metal charts over the years, two songs from their debut album have stood the test of time: “Spit It Out” and “Surfacing.” These numbers are played at nearly every Slipknot concert, and bringing them back for the encore was the perfect nod to both the 1999 and 2024 renditions of the band. As they wrapped with “Scissors,” which they haven’t played since 2000, the curtain closed on what’s destined to be one of the best metal tours of 2024. Even if it’s mostly inspired by 1999!
There are still plenty of chances to see Slipknot on the Here Comes the Pain 25th Anniversary Tour, where they’ll be joined by Knocked Loose, plus Orbit Culture and Vended on select dates. Check out the tour dates below and the full Indiana setlist here.
