Half of U2, the singer of Pearl Jam, and the sweet voice from Swell Season, honored Glen Hansard at his funeral Tuesday (8/4) in Dublin.

Bono, Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich, Cór Chúil Aodha, Damien Dempsey, David Evans, Eddie Vedder, Markéta Irglová, Liam Ó Maonlaí and Lisa O’Neill added music and words to the Irish Catholic ceremony at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the musician who died last month after an early morning motorcycle accident.

Thousands gathered in central Dublin to pay their respects to Hansard, the Oscar and Tony-winning musician, actor and frontman of The Frames.

Others watched the services on video screens set up in the adjoining St. Patrick's Park while countless fans around the world tuned in as it streamed online.

Of those who mourned in person were Hozier, Imelda May, former U2 manager Paul McGuinness, actors Steve Coogan and Chris O’Dowd, Once director John Carney and Hansard’s former Commitments castmates Andrew Strong and Angeline Ball.

The Very Reverend William Morton told the congregation the ceremony was being held “in thanksgiving for and in celebration” Hansard’s “life, talent, generosity and kindness.”

“I want to speak for my family. We want to say how absolutely blown away and humbled and so thankful we are for the incredible huge amount of love, honour, and dignity that the people of this country and around the world have shown to my brother.

"Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

Then he sang a beautiful tune from his uncle Paul's band he used to be a part of, Papa Hobo, called "I Can See God."

Bono and The Edge

The U2 singer and Dublin native took to the podium and played a voice message from Patti Smith who could not attend. She wrote a poem for Hansard and his family.

“It was a very nice day, a very nice day/ Across the glen, he came to play/ The leaves above began to spin/ And I heard him sing into the wind/ It was a very nice day, he came my way/ And placed the book into my hands/ And every word was poetry/ And he made his way beneath the sun.”

Then Bono read the words of "A Beautiful Day" and The Edge joined him.

Hansard released the tune on his 2012 solo album Rhythm and Repose. Vedder had performed it two dozen times on his solo tours, and Pearl Jam covered it five times during their 2024 Dark Matter Tour alongside Hansard who opened a leg of the tour.

Irglová was Hansard’s longtime musical partner in The Swell Season and his co-star in Once.

She is the only Czech woman to win an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2008 when the pair took home the trophy for "Falling Slowly" which they co-wrote for Once.

The two-and-a-half service ended with Hansard's casket being carried out of the church while the congregation sang Bob Dylan's "Forever Young."

Hansard performed the tune at least eight times, the last was in 2016.
