Mumford & Sons kicked off their three-night run at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday (8/11) with a very special set that included surprise appearances from actors Jason Sudeikis and Oscar Isaac.
Marcus Mumford (lead vocals, guitar, drums), Ben Lovett (keyboards, piano, vocals) and Ted Dwane (bass, guitar, vocals) delivered the sold out MSG crowd a 23-song setlist that featured tunes from five of their six studio albums (sorry Delta).
Speaking of, the trio hadn't played Madison Square Garden since 2018 during the Delta Tour where they performed two nights in December.
Now eight years later, the fellas are supporting their sixth studio album, Prizefighter, which came out in February on Gentlemen of the Road and Glassnote.
The 14-song disc was co-produced by Mumford & Sons and Aaron Dessner and boasts guest appearances from Hozier, Chris Stapleton, Gracie Abrams and Gigi Perez.
About halfway through the show, the band, which also includes touring musician Rob Moose on fiddle, welcomed their first guest, 2x Golden Globe winner Jason Sudeikis.
The comedian who first made a splash on SNL for eight years starting in 2005, and played David Clark in 2013's We’re the Millers, hit it big when he landed the starring role in Apple's Ted Lasso.
In its first three seasons, Ted Lasso, a comedy about an American football coach who is hired to run a professional soccer team in the UK, has received 73 awards from 213 nominations overall, including 13 Primetime Emmys, two of which were consecutive wins for Outstanding Comedy Series.
As the show heads into its 4th and final(?) season, it's nice that Sudeikis, made the brief cameo at The Garden.
It wasn't the first time he's joined the band on stage for the song. Last summer when the group was playing at the Azura Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, Kansas, Marcus and the boys were joined by Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Welton), Juno Temple (Keeley Jones), and Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard).
The cast was in town as they had just wrapped taping of the series whose theme was co-written by Marcus and composer Tom Howe.
Much later in the show, Oscar Isaac's met the group on the B-stage to perform "Dink's Song (Fare Thee Well)” the American folk tune Isaac and Marcus sung together on the soundtrack of the 2013 Coen brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis.
They also performed it live at New York’s Town Hall in September 2013 during the Another Day, Another Time concert celebrating the film’s incredible music.
Isaac is no stranger to singing in front of audiences.
Before he decided to get serious about acting, he went to music school in Miami and was in a number of bands with unusual names like Petrified Frogs, Blinking Underdogs, and the Closet Heterosexuals.
When in The Worms, Oscar and the guys played Warped Tour ’97, which featured Green Day, Limp Bizkit, and the Descendents in the bill.
“I like to say we opened for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, but really, we played six hours before them on another stage,” he told Vice last year.
The Prizefighter tour has one more show at MSG. In September they head to Brazil then back to the US for the rest of the tour.
