Poppy brought the Constantly Nowhere tour to the Hollywood Palladium on Friday night, and by the time she took the stage in her signature leotard under the strobe lights, the self-proclaimed “Poppyseeds” were ready to dance, sing, and start a circle pit unlike anything you’ve seen.
Setlist.fm has covered Poppy quite a few times — most recently kicking off this very same tour in Washington, DC, with a series of live debuts. But being there in person? A whole different beast…almost as beastly as the screams she let out on the opening number, “have you had enough?” From there, she tore through “the cost of giving up,” “Concrete,” and “Bruised Sky,” giving all of her respective musical eras something to sing about — literally.
“Some people like candy, some people like coffee,” from “Concrete,” sung in a sugary-sweet voice before she launched right back into the metal universe? It’s all very Poppy. And the Hollywood crowd (us included) saw it firsthand. Unsurprisingly, this contrast is what makes a Poppy concert such a hot ticket. One minute, Poppy sounds like she’s floating through a glossy pop dream that even Charli XCX could hardly compete with….
Next, she’s commanding a room full of metal fans to open up a pit like she’s been doing this her entire life. Speaking of which, heavier songs like “Scary Mask,” “Eat the Hate,” and “the center’s falling out” were major crowd pleasers at the Palladium, with the audience responding to every breakdown. Tracks like “crystallized” and “vital” (featuring Poppy on guitar) gave us a palate cleanser before the next heavy verse hit….
But for the most part? The pacing was practically perfect. Poppy’s stage presence is nothing short of surreal — able to bounce between metal moments and pop numbers like it’s her full-time job. Because it kind of is. She’s not chasing the crowd’s attention; she already has it… and this became obvious even as the night wound down with “Public Domain” and “Time Will Tell.”
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Poppy show without “V.A.N.,” her Bad Omens collaboration that’s quickly become a setlist staple. She took the podium for this song and a few others, giving everyone in the room a chance to see her moves and hear her screams in full force. Even without Noah Sebastian onstage, the song still landed like a mechanical breakdown in the best possible way, all digital panic, crushing guitars, and crowd-wide banter that never settled down.
By that point, the Palladium had already been pulled through pop, metal, industrial noise, and whatever beautiful glitch Poppy exists inside, but she still wasn’t finished. She closed the night with “If We’re Following the Light” and “new way out,” ending the show on a note that blurs the lines between genres. Truly, you can’t get more Poppy than that.
